Candidate's Statement: I have been an active member of Sigma Xi since 1995 and have learned the importance of being a member of Sigma Xi. This will be my fifth annual Sigma Xi meeting and I would like the opportunity to start serving Sigma Xi in a more active manner. Sigma Xi has been an extremely positive influence on the faculty and students of Grove City College and has provided a means for the various departments to interact on a scientific level. I have found that my membership in Sigma Xi has provided me with a unique opportunity to engage in conversations with faculty outside my particular area. This interaction has not only helped my professional career but it has also provided opportunities for the students at Grove City College. If elected as the Director of the Mid-Atlantic Region I would like to promote this type of interaction, not only within the Mid-Atlantic region but across Sigma Xi.

Candidate's Statement: Sigma Xi has made great strides in recent years, but much more can be done to maintain and enhance the Society's role as a potent voice for the achievements and promise of science. As a Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region, I would work with our chapters to enhance communications within and between chapters, and to identify "best practices and programs" within the region that might also be applicable at the regional and national level. I would also help our chapters to seek solutions on how to improve the efficiency of their recruitment and educational activities.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Regular Member since 1979; Member, Grants-in-Aid of Research Committee (2001-2004); assisted with Sigma Xi's early web efforts, including creating the first ever website for a Sigma Xi Forum and presenting the first ever web workshop for delegates at an annual meeting; Officer of the University of Maryland Chapter for 15 years, including two terms as President, one of which culminated in the chapter receiving a "Certificate of Excellence" Award (1994).

Biographical Information: I graduated from U.C. Berkeley in the 60's, getting my first exposure to science as I earned a B.S. in Genetics. I received my M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University in Plant Breeding & Genetics, and joined the faculty at the University of Maryland in 1977, where I became a member of Sigma Xi. I have been a plant breeder at Maryland for the past 27 years, releasing or co-releasing three varieties of melons and chairing the international Cucurbit Genetics Cooperative since 1988. I have also advised graduate students and conducted research into plant diseases and postharvest physiology. Although I have never applied for an administrative position at Maryland, I have held several, including Acting Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for Research. In the latter capacity, I have regularly presented seminars to graduate and undergraduate students on the ethics and responsible conduct of research.

Candidate's Statement: Membership in Sigma Xi is a matter of both honor and duty. Members who fulfill their duty to promote the aims of the society, in turn, honor the legacy of past members who made Sigma Xi what it is today. As a chapter-based society for science and engineering, the success of Sigma Xi depends on the success of the local chapters. Through the efforts of dedicated individuals at both the local and national level, progress in chapter vitality has been made---new chapters have been chartered, and other chapters have been re-vitalized. However, some chapters remain "flat" and others continue to decline. While I have been able to serve my local chapters in various officer positions, I wish to do more for the society. If elected to the office of Regional Director for the Mid-Atlantic region, I will encourage dialogue and foster connections and collaborations between chapters in the region in order to increase the impact and vitality of the chapters.
