Candidate's Statement: I've enjoyed serving in many capacities at the local, regional and national levels during the last 10 years. Locally, I've held every chapter position except treasurer several times over. I've served on regional nominating committees, and-during a term as North Central Regional Director-served on the Search Committee for our current Executive Director. If I am elected to this committee, I will bring a perspective that is both aware of current local concerns and the requirements of an international organization.

Candidate's Statement: Through my attendance at the national meetings in LA last November, I developed a broader appreciation for the Sigma Xi mission, especially with respect to the undergraduate research experience. I especially enjoyed meeting society members from smaller institutions and learning about scientific research experiences of their students. I look forward to being involved in the activities of the organization at the national level and will try to represent the particular interests of the membership from small colleges.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities: I have been an active member of the Oberlin College Chapter of Sigma Xi for many years. During 2002-2003, I served as chapter Vice-president and organized our annual chapter lecture series. In 2003-04, I served as chapter President. In addition to organizing our annual banquet and initiation of 40+ new members, I represented our chapter at the national meetings in Los Angeles. While there, I served as a judge for the student poster competition at the concurrently held student research conference. I have directed the research projects for numerous Oberlin students who have been elected as associate members to Sigma Xi.

Biographical Information: I hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology from UCLA, with a specialty in prehistoric archaeology. I have taught at Oberlin College for 32 years, where I teach courses in New and Old World Archaeology and human evolution. I have done archaeological fieldwork in the US (CA, AZ, OH, WA, PA) and abroad (France, Germany). Over the years, I have expanded my primary research focus in French Paleolithic archaeology to hunter-gatherer adaptations broadly construed. This includes zooarchaeological research in Northwest Coast shell middens which has been directed at determining seasonality of human occupations through the analysis of growth annuli in little neck clams. Currently, I am participating in an archaeological survey project in southwestern Germany aimed at locating evidence for the earliest farming settlements. I have consistently involved undergraduates in field and laboratory work throughout my career and persist in the belief that such involvement provides a critical complement to coursework in the development of archaeological research scientists.

Candidate's Statement: I believe that many of the needs of the various Chapters of Sigma Xi are often diverse so that one uniform program is inadequate to serve the needs of all Chapters. If elected to represent the North Central Region I will attempt to seek out individuals for office who recognize this diverse makeup of the Society and who will work towards correcting the present situation. Until now these differences in programs and operations have not been clearly defined nor adequately addressed. In order to maintain vigorous and active chapters, their individualized requirements must be taken into account. The responsibility of the individuals who serve on nominating committees is to nominate individuals who have been active in Sigma Xi at both the local and Societal levels and are aware of the seriousness of the problems the Society is facing. To date the decline in membership has been a major concern of our organization but little has emerged as a solution to the problem. While universities and colleges provide the largest pool of potential members, industrial and government laboratories are not in a role of lesser importance. We need to elect officers who will focus on the membership problem as well as the name recognition and visibility of Sigma Xi. We need to have a Board of Directors determine what it will take for individuals to accept and retain membership in Sigma Xi. What programs at the local level and the national level are meaningful to these potential members? How can headquarters assist in the development of these programs? I would work towards seeking out those individuals for office who will support the development of those programs that will help to strengthen the Chapters and make those programs meaningful to the membership. Sigma Xi needs to represent its membership in meaningful and visible ways if it is to fulfill its mission. It needs to rebuild the commitment of faculty and management so they can play a visible and vital role in Chapter activities.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities: He has served as a Regional Director, and as a Director at Large. He also served on the Committee on Regions, The Board of Directors, The Executive Committee, The Search Committee for the Executive Director, The Committee on Awards, and The Committee on Membership and Qualifications. He was the primary mover in getting the Sigma Xi Board of Directors to commit to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair.

Biographical Information: Dr. Zand earned a B.S. degree with majors in chemistry and physics, an M.S. at the Polytechnic University of New York, and after service in the army returned to graduate school and received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Brandeis University. He received an N.I.H. post- doctoral fellowship for studies in the Biochemistry Department at Harvard Medical School and, after two years, joined the newly formed Biophysics Research Division, directed by his postdoctoral mentor, at the University of Michigan. His current appointments at the University of Michigan are: Professor of Biochemistry in the Medical School, Professor of Macromolecular Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering, and Research Scientist in the Biophysics Research Division. He was elected to Sigma Xi by the Harvard-Radcliffe Chapter and, since his arrival at the University of Michigan, has held positions in the Michigan Chapter of Sigma Xi as a Council member, Chapter Secretary, Vice President and President. He has been active at the Societal level for the past 20 years with appointments on the Committee on Nominations, Committee on Membership, Committee on Qualifications, Committee on Awards, and the Committee on Programs. He was elected to serve two terms as North Central Regional Director, and two terms as Director-at-Large and in those capacities served on the Board of Directors and also served a term on the Executive Committee. In 2001-02 he served as a member of the Search Committee for the Society's new Executive Director.
