Candidate's Statement: I have been a member of Sigma Xi since 1970. I was a research scientist and teacher at Boston University and a departmental chairman (Biology) there as well. I became a science dean in 1996 at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Supporting the research endeavor and helping students succeed in sciences and engineering have been my two major activities during my career; Sigma Xi has been a strong ally in both. I am happy to serve Sigma Xi if elected.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities: I have been the president of both the Boston University and UMass Lowell Chapters of Sigma Xi. As president at UMass Lowell, I direct the chapter's activities, including overseeing the annual banquet and maintaining the Sigma Xi web pages for UMass Lowell. Recently we added a high school teacher of the year award; we also give out several prestigious scholarships at the banquet and have a guest speaker to excite and motivate the student members present. In the past, I was active in the American Society of Mammalogists, being an Associate Editor of the Journal of Mammalogy and member of the society's Board of Directors.

Biographical Information: I earned my B.S. degree at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College, in Biology, and my Ph.D. at Indiana University in Zoology in the Genetics Program. My principal fields of study are genetics, evolution, and ecology. I had a postdoctoral position at the University of Hawaii and one at Princeton University before moving to Boston University. At Boston University, I had a very active research laboratory, taught genetics as my primary teaching responsibility, and am the author of a genetics textbook currently in its seventh edition. I came to UMass Lowell 10 years ago as dean. I try to attend the Sigma Xi annual meetings as often as possible.
