9-point motion relative to dues for 2008-2009:
- In accordance with Bylaw IV, Section 1 A (i), Sigma Xi establishes its basic annual dues for FY2009 (year ending 30 June 2009) at US$74.00 (US$71.00 as approved by the November 2006 Assembly of Delegates) increased by the Higher Education Price Index (HEPI) as of the last date of the preceding Fiscal Year ending June 30 rounded up to the nearest dollar. From each payment of annual dues collected at the full rate for FY2009 from Members and Associate Members, US$4.00 shall be allocated to the Society's Grants-in-Aid of Research program.
- In accordance with Bylaw IV, Section 1 A (ii), Members or Associate Members who are full-time Degree-seeking students at an institution of higher education may request dues equal to US$25.00 for FY2009.
- From each payment of annual dues collected at the full rate for FY2009 from Members and Associate Members affiliated with a chapter, US$11.00 [US$10.50 plus the HEPI as of the last date of the preceding Fiscal Year ending June 30 rounded up to the nearest US$0.50 will be distributed to the chapters as follows: one-quarter to be distributed to provide an equal amount (uniform increment) for each chapter, and three-quarters to the chapters to provide an equal amount per member (per capita increment).
- In accordance with Bylaw IV, Section 1 C (i), the initial fee for each newly elected Member or Associate Member during FY2009 is US$15.00 plus the dues rate* approved by the November 2007 Assembly of Delegates for FY2009 in point #1 above. Also any chapter electing to have reduced initial fees must do so for all its initiates in that fiscal year.
* Any chapter may elect to reduce the initial fee of initiates who pay annual dues at the full rate by an amount equal to the Local Support allocation (point #2 above) with the provision that no Local Support for that initiate will be paid to the chapter with which that initiate is active during the first fiscal year following election.
- The promotion fee for each promoted Member (from active Associate Member status) during FY2009 is US$25.00. Associate Members, who are not active, shall also be required to pay one year's annual dues as a condition of promotion.
- In cases where two members of the same household are active in the Society, and pay annual dues at the full rate and only one copy of American Scientist is requested, a reduction equal to one-half of the annual dues of that individual not to receive copies of American Scientist is made in the combined annual dues for FY2009 if both renewal notices are paid and returned together.
- In accordance with Bylaw IV, Section 1 (B), the Life Membership Fee per Member or Associate Member is $1,475 (US$1,425 as approved by the November 2006 Assembly of Delegates) increased by the Higher Education Price Index (HEPI) as of the last date of the preceding Fiscal Year ending June 30 rounded up to the nearest US$25.
The Life Membership Fee may be paid in a first installment of 40% of the total fee and two further installments of 30% of the total fee each, provided the installments are received in successive fiscal years. In case of default in payments, Sigma Xi will refund to the individual the amount paid less an amount equal to the annual dues which would have been paid in the period covered.
- Emeritus members, as defined in Bylaw II 7D, pay annual dues at a rate 1/2 that for Members and Associate Members. Each chapter desiring to pay the dues of emeritus members in accordance with Bylaw IV 1A (iii) will submit prior to 30 November 2007, a list of individuals to be so classified, with the requirement that, for each name appearing on its list, that chapter will pay to the Society's administrative offices one-half the current annual dues for Members and Associate Members. Chapters will similarly notify the Society's administrative offices by 30 November 2007 of the individuals whose regular dues for 2008-2009 will be paid by the chapter.
- Subvention paid for travel to the FY2009 Annual Meeting by one delegate from each chapter in good standing shall be by the most economic means practicable and shall not exceed the round-trip coach fare on any scheduled airline between the airport nearest the home of the delegate and the site of the Annual Meeting. It shall not in any case exceed the cheapest air coach fare from the farthest point in North America (including Hawaii). Travel subvention should not be withheld for a delegate from a chapter that meets all requirements for good standing except for the requirement of Bylaw III, 1 B (c).
