Chapter Affiliation: Nordic Chapter

Biographical Information: Paul C. Kettler is the organizer and first elected President of the Nordic Chapter of Sigma Xi, of which he has been a dues-paying member continuously since his induction in June 1963. He is a summa cum laude graduate (mathematics) of Princeton University, with an M.B.A. (finance) from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. (mathematics) from the University of Oslo, among his higher degrees. He has served on the faculties of the University of Chicago, the University of California, Berkeley, the Keller Graduate School of Management, and DePaul University. He has offered extended series of short courses on financial hedging at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade. At present he is a Visiting Research Mathematician at the Centre of Mathematics for Applications sponsored by the Norwegian Research Council, and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Oslo. His research interests included stochastic processes, mathematical finance, and copula theory.

Dr. Kettler has served as Chairman of the Board of a market-making member firm of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, and has owned and operated an investment banking and brokerage business, from which he is now retired, having headquarters in Chicago with offices throughout the United States and in Düsseldorf, Germany. He has consulted in the specialized area of econometric model building in relation to financial processes, most notably to the Boston Consulting Group and its clients, including Proctor & Gamble and the Times Mirror Co.

He has served as a qualified expert witness on securities and commodities matters in federal and state courts of the United States, and before its Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. A client represented in federal court in Baltimore was Merrill Lynch, Inc. He provides peer review for Quantitative Finance and the Scandinavian Actuarial Journal, and formerly for Mathematical Reviews. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the Business and Management Honor Society, and additionally the American Mathematical Society and the Econometric Society.

As an American with both scientific and business backgrounds working in Europe he is well prepared to assist Sigma Xi to project its image internationally, including the expansion of membership to highly qualified scientists and engineers at all stages of their careers. His vision for Sigma Xi includes replicating the Nordic Chapter’s "cyber" model to other regions of the world where it is impractical for members to meet face-to-face on a regular basis. Natural areas for this model exist in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Pacific, and South America. "Networking the new cyber chapters into a global community of mutually supportive scientists is not a distant dream,” states Dr. Kettler with characteristic enthusiasm. "This is an achievable goal for the here and now."
