Candidate's Statement: Please note: Due to a prior commitment, I am not able to attend the 2009 Annual Meeting. If elected, I am willing to serve and will arrange to attend future annual meetings.

The Associate Director position is a support role, but it is also an opportunity to watch, listen, and learn how the Society functions and a time to formulate ideas for the future. Associate Directors can be an additional set of hands, eyes, and ears for the Director, to help better meet the needs of the chapters. Ideally, leadership teams in organizations maintain the infrastructure of the organization behind the scenes, so that chapters and members do not lose focus on carrying out the mission of the group. Sigma Xi has a long and rich history of promoting and honoring scientific research. However, we are at an unusual juncture in which the infrastructure details need attention in order to be able to continue to serve the chapters and members. This may require additional work for everyone, including Associate Directors. I would be honored to serve as the Associate Director for the Mid-Atlantic region and would work closely with the Regional Director, Drew Velkey, to identify projects to serve the regional chapters.

Candidate's Statement: Sigma Xi has the rather unique distinction of being a chapter based organization. This distinction places a significant level of responsibility for the health and wealth of the organization on chapters. Hence, I consider the opportunity to work at the chapter level to be both an honor and a true challenge. For it is at this level that talented young scientists and engineers must be recruited to commit their enthusiasm and excitement of science to Sigma Xi. If elected to serve, my energies will be directed toward supporting the Regional Director and assisting in those efforts deemed positive for the growth of chapters and the national organization. Active, involved chapters translate to an ever-expanding national organization.
