Biographical Information: Dr. Peter Burke serves STERIS Corporation as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. STERIS develops, manufactures, and markets infection prevention, contamination prevention, microbialreduction, and surgical support systems, products, services, and technologies for healthcare, scientific, research, industrial, and government customers worldwide. The Company was founded in 1987, and is headquartered in Mentor, Ohio. Dr. Burke joined STERIS in March 2001. He is responsible for STERIS’s research, development, regulatory, and quality functions. He worksclosely with the Company’s marketing, sales, manufacturing, and support functions to facilitate new applications of current technologies; leads the development of new technologies from conception to commercialization; and monitors and assures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements for the Company’s products. Since joining the Company, Dr. Burke has significantly reduced the number of research projects, in order to focus both financial and human resources on a smaller number of key, high impact projects. He has led efforts to intensify research and development objectives, developing new technologies, as well as implementing existing technologies in new markets. Before joining STERIS, Dr. Burke served as Vice President, Research and Development for Carter-Wallace, Inc., where he was responsible for all technical development, product formulation and process development for the Carter Products Division. He was responsible for all developments in over-the-counter medicine, personal care items and medical devices. He was also a member of the Carter-Wallace Inc. Scientific Advisory Board, which directed all of the company’s research activity. Dr. Burke also held several corporate research and development positions at Sara Lee/Douwe Egbert, culminating as Vice President,International Research and Development and Technical Services. While with this company, he directed the initial development of many well-known medical devices, drugs, immunoassays, personal care, and household products, and successfully streamlined product development cycle times. Dr. Burke holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Rutgers University; a Master of Science in Microbiology from Seton Hall University; and Masters and Doctorate of Philosophy Degrees in Microbiology/Biochemistry from St. John’s University. He also is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, and a member of Sigma Xi. Dr. Burke has authored over 15 patents and 20 publications in chemical,microbiological, biochemical, and dermatological sciences. Dr. Burke has served on the Board of Directors for the Consumer Product Specialty Association, the Non-Prescription Drug Association,and the Cosmetic, Drug & Toiletries Association. He is currently activein the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed),University Hospitals of Cleveland Programs, the Corporate Executive Board for Research & Development, and the NASA/Glenn Microsystem Initiative.

Biographical Information: Dr. Mian Liu is an Assistant Research Scientist at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC) at the University of Georgia. His research interest focuses on the structure-based drug design, namely, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry as a tool to obtain the structural or conformational information of ligands and the combination of ligands and receptors, and after rational design, chemical synthesis of pseudopeptides, peptidomimetics, carbohydrates and other small molecular compounds. Dr. Mian Liu has published more than a dozen of research journal papers, numerous symposium proceedings, and conference abstracts. He serves on the judge panels to review manuscripts submitted by his peers for Journal of Combinatorial Chemistry, Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Letters, Chemistry and Biology etc. Dr. Mian Liu is a member of American Chemical Society, American Peptide Society and Society of Glycobiology. Currently, Dr. Mian Liu is a full member of Sigma Xi and assigned as an at-large member. He shows strong interest to be a representative to the Nominations Committee of Sigma Xi, which is one of the most important committees of any organization, and he is ready to serve for the scientific community as well as dedicate to his research.
