Candidate's Statement: I have been intimately involved with Sigma Xi since my induction in 1999. I truly believe in the mission of the society and constantly
strive to Walk the Talk, serving in every role that my skills can be of benefit. I have served as President of my Chapter since 2001 and as associate Director of MI for the past year, I also am on the committee for qualifications and nominations. Finding the new role of Sigma Xi in an ever changing, economically challenged, and increasingly diverse society as Director of MI is a role I believe I am capable of taking on and have the experience and knowledge to do well.

Biographical Information: I obtained both my BS and MS from UMD in Horticultural research. I began my science career assisting my father Dr. Francis Gouin (sigma Xi member UMD) while in grade school scribing and taking data and setting up experiments on compost usage and overwintering of woody perrennials , and worked as a lab assistant in the UMD Post Harvest Physiology lab while still in High School. My career at USDA began in 1986 as a lab and orchard technician for the Pomology tissue culture lab and in 1991 began my position as citrus quarantine manager for the Fruit Lab. As manager I operate a laboratory and greenhouse as a support Scientist for USDA-Molecular Plant Pathology Lab, maintain multiple in planta collections of citrus pathogens, perform a variety of pathogen transmissions and extractions, and manage experiments performed by multiple scientists from world-wide locations. I currently live in Deale, MD with my wonderful husband Pat and our furry kids (dogs)- Abigail, Rosie, Rufus and Charlotte as well as other scaly, shelled, and feathery critters. We enjoy our 1987 Tiffin Allegro RV - "Gone 2 the Dawgs" as often as possible spending time with our classic RV pals.

Candidate's Statement: If elected Director Sharlin will make every effort to involve retired Sigma Xi retirees in Sigma Xi activities especially in using their
expertise and experience in enhancing K-12 science education.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Sharlin has been a member of Sigma Xi since 2004 and is a member of the Washington, DC Chapter.
Biographical Information: Harold Sharlin has a BS in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in American history. He taught history of science for 25 years last at Iowa State University. He published numerous articles in his field as well as three books. In 1988 Sharlin founded the Retired Scientists, Engineers and
Technicians (ReSET) that recruits retired scientists and engineers to work in elementary school classrooms enhancing the teaching of science. He is now CEO of ReSET. Sharlin has been working with the Sigma Xi executive director to expand the ReSET idea to Sigma Xi chapters and in 2009 Sharlin was PI in an NSF proposal submitted by
Sigma Xi. We plan to re-submit in 2010.

Candidate's Statement: I am continually grateful to be associated with Sigma Xi and I am always delighted by the companionship I find in this multidisciplinary society. I have met fascinating people that I am sure I would never have come in contact with were it not for Sigma Xi. Because I believe in the Society, I give of my time freely to support its efforts. I have served in a variety of ways, and each has been a pleasure. I am now completing my term as Director of the Multi-Institutional Constituency Group, and I believe I have more to contribute in this role. I am asking for your support to serve our constituency group and the Society as a member of the Board for a second term. I believe I have a unique perspective to offer because of my unusual career path that includes both academic research and management at a national laboratory. I know the challenges our Society faces and stand ready to continue to work to shape the path that will lead us to a robust and interesting future.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Kelly has been a member of Sigma Xi since 1996. She served as the Omaha Chapter's Secretary/Treasurer, then Vice-President, and briefly as President before moving to the Tri-Cities. She is a past member of the Committee on Qualifications and Membership, the Committee on Nominations and the Committee on Strategic Planning. She also previously served as the Associate Director of the Northwest Region. She currently serves as the president of her chapter and as the Director for the Multi-Institutional Constituency Group, and on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. She chaired a working group that did a comprehensive review of the bylaws of the Society and recommended changes that should lead towards greater agility in the future. In addition to her work for Sigma Xi, Kelly serves on the Governing Board of the Council for Chemical Research and is active in the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable at the National Academies.
Biographical Information: Dr. Kelly Sullivan joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in August of 2001, and is currently the Director of Institutional Partnerships, a resource used throughout the Laboratory. She is responsible for developing and maintaining collaborations and partnerships with colleges and universities that help the Laboratory achieve its missions for the nation and the world. She also manages the Laboratory's Institutional and Distinguished Postdoctoral Programs and oversees joint appointments between PNNL and other institutions. Prior to coming to PNNL, Dr. Sullivan was a chemistry professor at Mankato State University in Minnesota and at Creighton University in Nebraska. She taught physical and general chemistry, and also directed the Creighton Chemistry Players, a team of faculty and students who brought the excitement of chemistry to children and adults through theatre and music. Her research interests focus on the electronic structure of small molecules and ions. She serves on several national advisory boards to various education-related initiatives and is a speaker on career development for women scientists. Dr. Sullivan received a B.S. in Chemistry from Christian Brothers College and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Texas Tech University. In addition to Sigma Xi, she is a member of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, and other professional societies.
