Candidate's Statement: Increasingly, leading edge scientific research depends on interdisciplinary efforts represented by the diverse membership of Sigma Xi. Most often membership in Sigma Xi is the first rung on the ladder to success for students and young faculty members who have demonstrated their abilities for scientific research. Thus, Sigma Xi accelerates young professionals along a path to success in diverse scientific careers. Sigma Xi chapters provide a local social network for further recognition of scholarship and if properly informed and focused, could bring to bear academic resources toward (1) STEM education, (2) the public understanding of science through Science Cafes and (3) state and local level science policy activities.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities:

Candidate's Statement: Since my induction into Sigma Xi in 1996, I have been heavily active both at the chapter and regional level, serving on the Board at the Wayne State Chapter and serving as Associate Director of the North Central Region. My willingness to participate has always been motivated by my respect for what Sigma Xi stands for. To that end, I was privileged to have worked with other regional directors within the past couple of years in ensuring the continued image and success of Sigma Xi and its mission. As someone who has crossed several scientific boundaries, having studied various subjects from anthropology to psychiatry, I, if elected, will continue in the pursuit of encouraging our young scientists to network in their respective fields and to branch out to seek collaboration across scientific boundaries. Furthermore, given my background in leadership at local, state, and national levels I will continue to work hard to maintain only the highest standards for such a valuable resource as Sigma Xi.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: I have served for over 5 years on the Board of the Wayne State University Chapter of Sigma Xi; I have served for 3 years as Associate Director of the NorthCentral region; In 2006 I was heavily involved in the organization and execution of the 2006 Annual Meeting held in Detroit, MI; I have presented several Sigma Xi sponsored lectures and round-table discussions in and around the Detroit area; I continue to serve as Chairman of the Board of Southfield Oncology Institute; I serve on several national scientific advisory panels; at the local level, I serve on multiple admissions advisory committees to both Wayne State's main campus and our medical campus; Outside of academia, I also sit on several arts councils, including the Wayne County Council of Arts.

Candidate's Statement: My experience as the President of the IIT Chapter of Sigma Xi has clearly brought to my attention some of the challenges the
Society faces in the 21st century. In an environment where there are a proliferation of professional societies vying for the attention of scientists, it is increasingly difficult for individuals to justify continuing membership in a broadly-based society such as Sigma Xi. At the IIT Chapter, we have made a conscious decision to make the promotion of research by undergraduate students one of our primary goals. By encouraging our youngest colleagues to become involved in the research enterprise and making them aware of Sigma Xi's role, we have the opportunity to build new lifelong members. As a candidate for North Central Director, I am committed to being the primary liaison for the constituent chapters with the Sigma Xi Board. The Society needs the ideas and support of all of its chapters and members in order to thrive in the future. The position of Director is vital to the organization and I would be honored to serve the members in this capacity.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: I have served as President of the IIT Chapter of Sigma Xi (2005-present) and delegate to the annual meeting (2006). As a Fellow of the International Center for Diffraction Data, I am currently the chair of their Education Subcommittee (2005-present) as well as member of the Scholarship Committee (2005-present) and the Meeting Support Committee (2005-present). Since 2008, I have been serving as a member of the Advanced Photon Source Beam Time Allocation Committee. In addition to my administrative responsibilities as Associate Chair (1993-1999) and Associate Dean (2002-present), my service to IIT includes
being a member of the Faculty Council (1986-1988), Chair of the Research subcommittee for the National Commission for IIT (1994-1995), Chair of the University Committee on Promotion and Tenure (2008), and liaison between IIT and Argonne and Fermi National Laboratories. Since 1993, I have served as a member of the High School Bridge Building Contest (Chair, 1993-2003) which runs a large Chicago Regional contest annually and an International contest biannually on the IIT campus.
