Keynote speakers and panelists provided a forum for experts and key players from academe, industry and government to begin a dialogue that will ultimately inform, as well as raise the awareness of, policymakers and the general public about the implications and critical importance of these issues. Four science cafés were held Thursday, November 11, at restaurants in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill in conjunction with Sigma Xi's symposium on food safety and security. These informal gatherings, featured local and national experts.
Society Award Winners presented prize lectures and receive their awards at the 2010 Annual Meeting. Sigma Xi's prestigious annual awards recognize excellence in research and communication.
Student Concept Papers that present creative ideas addressing the critical issue of food security in Haiti were sought for a competition organized by Food Safety and Security Symposium sponsor PHS Group, Inc., a management and technology firm based in Silver Spring, Maryland. The authors of the top three papers received monetary prizes.
Additional Activities included informal roundtables, poster presentations, organized group dining and catered receptions—all of which offer opportunities for collegial exchange as researchers, leaders and colleagues.
