2012 Assembly of Delegates:
Baccalaureate Colleges Associate Director
Name: Christopher Fasano
Present Position: Professor of Physics
Organization: Monmouth College
Chapter Affiliation: Knox College
Candidate's Statement: Baccalaureate Colleges play an important role in the education of future scientists. Since our focus is on undergraduates, we offer a unique scientific education that can be tailored to the needs of our students. This education can be broad, cross disciplinary, and interdisciplinary in nature, both in the sciences and beyond the sciences to include the humanities and the arts. Because our focus is on undergraduates, we can have a special impact on students from underrepresented groups as we can help them overcome the particular challenges they might face. We create scientists who are different and who are desperately needed to solve the complex problems that face us.
I am interested in serving in Sigma Xi to help faculty and students involved in the sciences at baccalaureate colleges. In particular, Sigma Xi can help foster both scholarly activity and research as pedagogy. It can do this in many ways and I am interested in brainstorming and developing new efforts, and in supporting existing efforts. What is one example of a challenge that baccalaureate colleges face and how might Sigma Xi help? Science departments can be quite small at baccalaureate colleges—leading to a sense of isolation for faculty members at those institutions. This isolation can even spread to the students in those programs. Sigma Xi might help by partnering with and participating in regional meetings of professional societies (like the APS, ACS, etc.) to provide a venue that more faculty and students can participate in. Sigma Xi could offer financial support for both faculty and students to attend these meetings. Also, we need to explore the possible uses of social media to connect faculty and students together, again, to address the sense of isolation that faculty and students at baccalaureate colleges sometimes feel.
Sigma Xi can connect us together to do great things, and I'm excited by the possibilities that I can imagine.

Name: Amy Stockert
Present Position: Assistant Professor of Biochemistry
Organization: Ohio Northern University
Chapter Affiliation: Ohio Northern University
Candidate's Statement: As associate director I believe I could serve the society by utilizing my experience gained as chapter president for two years and vice president for one year. Likewise, my experience as a chair in the local chapter of the American Chemical Society would benefit Sigma Xi. During my term as president and chair in these two societies, I organized several seminars and research talks. I also prepared an informational seminar for students wishing to attend graduate school. During this time, I attended a leadership institute and have dedicated my current work to gaining administrative experience. I believe that my efforts kept the local chapter vividly alive and have observed the involvement drop since my stepping down from the president position. I believe if given the opportunity to serve in this role I will be able to utilize my personal and formal leadership training to help revive regional participation. I believe tshe provision of quality enrichment experiences dealing with research is the best way to stimulate membership and most importantly membership involvement. If selected as the associate director, I will dedicate myself to improving the quality of membership in the society.
