Candidate's Statement: If elected as Associate Director, I will bring a great deal of diverse experience to offer to the Sigma Xi. I will strive to:

  • Expose young researchers to the activities of Sigma Xi.
  • Facilitate activities that expose young researchers to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.
  • Facilitate nominations of young researchers to join Sigma Xi.
  • Encourage young kids to consider science and engineering as important career options by organizing as well as encouraging others in the region to organize activities involving students and teachers which expose students to potential contributions of science and engineering to the society and role they can play in making these contributions. I have organized several such activities at the University of Manitoba.
  • Assist the Director as and when required.

Biographical Information: Distinguished Professor Dr. Digvir Jayas was educated at the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar, India; the University of Manitoba, and the University of Saskatchewan. Before assuming the position of Vice-President (Research and International), he held the position of Vice-President (Research) for two years and Associate Vice-President (Research) for eight years. Prior to his appointment as Associate Vice-President (Research), he was Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, Department Head of Biosystems Engineering, and Interim Director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Registered Professional Agrologist.

Dr. Jayas held a Canada Research Chair in Stored-Grain Ecosystems, and he conducts research related to drying, handling and storing grains and oilseeds and digital image processing for grading and processing operations in the Agri-Food industry. He has authored or co-authored over 700 technical articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and books dealing with issues of storing, drying, handling and quality monitoring of grains. He has collaborated with researchers in several countries but has had significant impact on development of efficient grain storage, handling and drying systems in Canada, China, India, Ukraine and USA.

Dr. Jayas has received awards from several organizations in recognition of his research and professional contributions. He is the recipient of the 2008 Dr. John M. Bowman Memorial Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation Award, as well as the 2008 NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize. In 2009, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He has received professional awards from Agriculture Institute of Canada, Applied Zoologists Research Association (India), American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba, Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Canadian Society for Bioengineering, Engineers Canada, Engineering Institute of Canada, Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers, Manitoba Institute of Agrologists, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (India) and Sigma Xi.

Dr. Jayas serves on the boards of many organizations including: ArcticNet, Composite Innovation Centre, Engineers Canada, ISIS Resource Centre, Genome Prairie, International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID), MabNet, Manitoba Chamber of Commerce, Manitoba Institute of Agrologists (MIA), Manitoba Health Research Council, St. Boniface General Hospital Research Enterprise Committee, TRIUMF, and TRLabs. He is also chair of the board of directors of RESOLVE, a prairie research network on family violence, and of the advisory board of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, a research centre dedicated to the discussion, discovery, and development of functional foods. He has served as President of Agriculture Institute of Canada, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba, Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology, Canadian Society for Bioengineering, and Manitoba Institute of Agrologists.

Name: Frederico Rosei

Candidate's Statement: I am keen on offering my scientific and academic experience and service to the Sigma Xi society. I firmly believe in the tradition of this organization of learned scholars and its potential for new activities and intend to foster its development, also promoting networking initiatives and new opportunities for young scientists

Biographical Information: Federico Rosei holds the Canada Research Chair in Nanostructured Organic and Inorganic Materials since 2003. He is Professor and Director of Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Énergie, Matériaux et Télécommunications, Université du Québec, Varennes (QC) Canada. He received MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

Dr. Rosei's research interests focus on the properties of nanostructured materials, and on how to control their size, shape, composition, stability and positioning when grown on suitable substrates. He has extensive experience in fabricating, processing and characterizing inorganic, organic and biocompatible nanomaterials. He has published over 130 articles in prestigious international journals (including Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Advanced Materials, Angewandte Chemie Int. Ed., Journal of the American Chemical Society, Nanoletters, Small, Physical Review Letters, Applied Physics Letters, Physical Review B, etc.), has been invited to speak at over 130 international conferences and has given over 130 seminars and colloquia in 37 countries on all inhabited continents. His publications have been cited over 2800 times and his H index is 28.

He is Member of the Sigma Xi Society, Fellow of the Institute of Nanotechnology, Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Metallurgy and Mining, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and Senior Member of the IEEE.

He has received several awards, including the FQRNT Strategic Professorship (2002-2007), the Tan Chin Tuan visiting Fellowship (NTU 2008), the Senior Gledden Visiting Fellowship (UWA 2009), Professor at Large at UWA (2010-2012), a Marie Curie Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the European Union (2001), a Canada Research Chair since 2003 (renewed in 2008 for a second five year term) a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Award from the Alexander von Humboldt foundation and the Rutherford Medal in Chemistry from the Royal Society of Canada.
