Regular Dues:
Applies to all individuals who are full or associate members and do not qualify for a reduction in dues as described below.
Emeritus Dues, (half the regular dues):
Are available to any member in either of these categories: (1) is retired and at least 65 years old, and has paid dues for the immediate preceding ten years, or (2) is retired and has paid dues for the preceding thirty years. This reduced dues option cannot be used in conjunction with another reduced dues option.
Student Dues:
Are available to any full-time, degree-seeking student at an institution of higher learning. Student status is renewable, but must be certified annually. Post-docs do not qualify for the student rate and are required to pay full member dues. Payment for the current year only will be accepted. Renewals will not be processed for additional years. This reduced dues option cannot be used in conjunction with another reduced dues option.
Life Membership:
Allows members to pay a one-time fee, in up to three installments, for lifetime active membership in Sigma Xi.
Combined Membership:
Two active members of the same household may request that only one member receive American Scientist magazine, thus reducing the annual dues of the other by one half. To choose this option, the primary member of a household should choose "Combined Full Rate." The combined partner should choose "Combined Half Rate". This reduced dues option cannot be used in conjunction with another reduced dues option. Emeritus members wishing not to receive the magazine should choose the dues category of "Combined Emeritus". Student members wishing not to receive the magazine should choose the category of "Combined Student". This will prevent mailing of the magazine but will not further reduce dues.
Unemployed Members:
A member who is involuntarily unemployed and is actively seeking employment, may assure active status by making a lower dues payment. Those who remit at least half of the regular annual dues will continue to receive American Scientist magazine, those who remit less than half but at least $7.50 will receive the Sigma Xi Today newsletter, and those who pay less than $7.50 will retain active status, but receive neither publication. Individuals must request to be placed on unemployed status and may do so for a maximum of two consecutive years. Payment for the current year only will be accepted. Renewals will not be processed for additional years. This reduced dues option cannot be used in conjunction with another reduced dues option.
Young and International Scientists:
May request support from a fund designed to offset dues payments for a limited number of scientists with annual incomes of less than US$20,000. Send e-mail to finance@sigmaxi.org to request support from this fund. Payment for the current year only will be accepted. Renewals will not be processed for additional years. This option cannot be used in conjunction with a reduced dues option.
Local Chapter Dues:
Sigma Xi also collects local dues on behalf of chapters. If you would like to include local dues in your payment, please use the
local dues reference list for the amount collected for your chapter.
Reactivation of Membership:
Any individual who has been inducted into Sigma Xi membership and has allowed their dues to lapse may reactivate their membership at any time using the reactivation form.
Automatic Dues Payment
You can choose to have your dues automatically charged on your credit card or drafted directly from your bank account. Current year dues are processed on May 15th of each year. Members who sign-up after this date will be charged immediately and then processed on May 15th each year thereafter. An e-mail notification of the dues deduction will be sent to you after your credit card/bank account has been charged/debited. Sign-up or change your current automatic payment options by using the Automatic Payment form.
Pre-payment of Member Dues:
Members are allowed to pre-pay their dues up to two additional years at the current dues rates. December 31st of each year is the cut-off date for pre-payment at the current fiscal year rates. As of January 1st of each year pre-payment can only be made at the upcoming fiscal year rates.
American Scientist as part of membership dues:
$24 is allocated to the one-year subscription to American Scientist. This amount is not deductible from annual membership dues.
Initiation/Promotion Fee:
For all new initiates (first-time members) and promotions, this fee covers the cost of processing and preparing a certificate of membership. Elections/promotions reported after January 1st should be assessed rates for the upcoming fiscal year.
Back Issue Fee:
Due to the increasing cost of coordinating and mailing individual back issues of American Scientist magazine to all late-dues payers, Sigma Xi has found it necessary to institute a back-issue shipping and handling fee. This fee will be added to the membership dues renewal amount for all members paying late. Late dues payments are those received after June 30 for the membership year beginning on July 1. Back issues are mailed on a monthly basis. Once back issue(s) have been generated at each month-end, please allow an additional 3-4 weeks for delivery. The back issue fee is $5.00.
