CHANGES IN MEMBERSHIP DUES AND AMERICAN SCIENTIST
Elected member representatives on the Board of Directors agreed after careful deliberation that two policy changes needed to occur in this upcoming fiscal year. The changes focus on ensuring the future fiscal soundness of our Society, reducing the environmental impact of our operations, and facilitating greater capability to deliver value to the membership.
First, the annual dues for regular (Full or Associate) members were lowered from $95 to $90 (all other dues rates remained the same). Second, all active, dues-paying members would receive a digital version of American Scientist rather than a print edition, beginning with the July-August 2012 issue. http://www.sigmaxi.org/update
Active members who wish to receive the paper edition of the magazine may subscribe separately at the member-discounted rate of $20 at any time. Details for subscribing will be included in your May-June issue of American Scientist-as well as through other member communications.

2012 SIGMA XI AWARDS HONOR LEADING SCIENTISTS
Solomon W. Golomb (SX 1956) will receive Sigma Xi's 2012 William Procter Prize for Scientific Achievement. Marye Anne Fox (SX 1998) has been named recipient of the McGovern Award, and the Walston Chubb Award for Innovation goes to Joseph DeSimone (SX 1986). Sivaguru Jayaraman (SX 2006) is this year's Young Investigator, and Dennis Meredith is the honorary member.

BARRY COLLIN NAMED SIGMA XI CHIEF OPERATING
Barry C. Collin has been named chief operating officer of Sigma Xi. He comes to the Society from the Collin Group, Inc. where he was chief innovation officer. Collin has been a consultant and speaker for the U.S. Department of Defense, the State Department, the Treasury and other federal, state and local agencies.

JOHN MCGOVERN LECTURE: "LOOKING AT EARTH"
Former astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan (SX 1989) held the audience spellbound at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting as she took them on a unique tour of the Earth, from early maps, to satellite images and spectacular photos from the moon. She received the 2011 McGovern Award.

REMEMBER TO VOTE FOR YOUR SIGMA XI LEADERSHIP
Online voting for Society leaders began on November 14, 2011. The electronic polls will remain open for 30 days and members must cast their ballot by 8:00 a.m. December 14, 2011. All active members of Sigma Xi have received instructions on how to cast their vote for the open elected positions. Results of the elections will be announced on the Society's website and in other membership communications.

MICHAEL A. DRISCOLL (SX 1996), now provost and executive vice chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage, has been named president of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
DAVID C. HAAK (2006 GIAR recipient) at the University of Washington recently had his work featured in the news media. He is trying to explain why some chilies are hot and some are not. http://ow.ly/8EqSR
Outskirts Press, Inc. has published "Making John a Soldier: A Nebraskan Goes to War" by JOHN MALLOY, SR. (SX 1956). The author's most recent book is in the military autobiography category and is available on book retailer websites such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. HENRY PETROSKI (SX 1968), American Scientist engineering columnist, delivered the commencement address and was awarded an honorary degree at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. His latest book, "An Engineer's Alphabet: Gleanings from the Softer Side of a Profession," has just been published by Cambridge University Press. Petroski is A. S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering and a professor of history at Duke University.
WILLAIM D. ROMEY (SX 1961) has published a book called "Following the St. Lawrence River from the end of Lake Ontario to the Cabot Strait: Field Notes of a Geologist-Geographer, 1952-2012" (2012). This is a CD with PDF files. The book is 646 pages long and has more than 3,500 color photos in it. He writes, "I'll be glad to furnish a copy to any reader who would like one.
