Member E-Newsletter—March 2013

Science Across Borders 2013

Sigma Xi President, Kelly O. Sullivan and fellow co-chair, Hans B. Püttgen of the Energy Center, EPFL cordially invite you to attend a two-day science meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland this summer.

Beginning on June 4th, Sigma Xi is hosting a Science Across Borders meeting that will bring together interested students, professional scientists, Sigma Xi members, and the public. This two day event will feature sessions focusing on international science efforts as they apply to development, diplomacy, technology and peace-building. There will also be evening events that take advantage of the beautiful surroundings of EPFL and Lausanne, Switzerland.

Among the featured speakers, Sigma Xi is excited to include Romain Murenzi, the Executive Director of the Academies of Science for the Developing World; Dr. Bernard Amadei, the founder of Engineers without Borders; Dr. Alice Gast, current President of Lehigh University and a Science Envoy;  Dr. E. William Colglazier, Science and Technology Adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; and Sheldon Himelfarb  of the U.S. Institute for Peace.

We hope you will consider joining us for this insightful discussion on the future of science and engineering on the international level.

Member E-News to be Distributed Monthly
Your Membership Team is happy to announce that our Member E-Newsletter will now be distributed to you on a monthly basis to make sure that we are keeping you, our valued members, up-to-date on what's going on with Sigma Xi.

Please note that in June, at the close of Sigma Xi's fiscal year, we will distribute a Year End Review of Sigma Xi instead of a Member E-Newsletter. We are already compiling that issue and look forward to sharing the highlights of what's already been a record-breaking year for your Society.

Please send us any photos you may have from Sigma Xi events in your area—we'd love to share them on our social media networks, as well as in future issues of Sigma Xi Today in American Scientist magazine, or on our website!

For more information or to submit photos and write-ups, please contact Hallie Sessoms, Manager of Communications at hsessoms@sigmaxi.org.

The Deadline for Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research Applications is March 15th!
The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences for more than 80 years.

By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning. Sigma Xi's GIAR program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering.

Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research.

Students may use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.

The application deadline is March 15, 2013.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers Survey
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is currently surveying for factors impacting employee retention as current employers are concerned about retention of skilled workers. When workers depart voluntarily, employers frequently ask why, but the responses are often less than completely honest. Large surveys like this one can assist by highlighting important demographic trends that can have a large impact on the attractiveness of an employer.

To that end, SPE is reaching out to societies and to alumni groups to gather information on why technical professionals change jobs or quit working. The survey has been designed to protect the identity of those participating, while providing important information to employers that can assist them in addressing practices that can lead to significant workforce attrition.

The link to the survey is here and will remain open through May 15, 2013. If this survey is applicable to you or your colleagues, we hope that you will consider participating. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact speresearch@spe.org.
