2013 Science Across Borders International Meeting

Sigma Xi President, Kelly O. Sullivan and fellow co-chair, Hans B. Püttgen of the Energy Center, EPFL cordially invite you to attend a two-day science meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland this summer.

Beginning on June 4th, Sigma Xi is hosting a "Science Across Borders," a meeting that will bring together interested students, professional scientists, Sigma Xi members, and the public. This two day event will feature sessions focusing on international science efforts as they apply to development, diplomacy, technology and peace-building. There will also be evening events that take advantage of the beautiful surroundings of EPFL and Lausanne, Switzerland.

We are excited to announce that new leadership opportunities are now available for your Society. We are seeking qualified candidates for the following positions—do you have contacts or colleagues who would best fit the available positions?

Save the Date for the 2013 Student Research Conference!
Student Research Conference—Save the Date

On November 8 & 9, 2013, undergraduate and graduate students are invited to present their research, participate in mentoring and networking activities, tours research facilities, attend panel discussions, and other events.

Featured speakers include 2013 Sigma Xi Award Winners Rita Colwell (Former Director, National Science Foundation) and Chad Mirkin (Director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology).

Students will present research to be evaluated by professional researchers in all fields of science and engineering. Both Sigma Xi members and non-members are invited to participate in the conference.

Supporting the Future of Science and Engineering with the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge!
Sigma Xi members Christopher Cohan, Richard Kidd and Sigma Xi Executive Director Dr. Jerry Baker represented your Society at the 2013 Conrad Innovation Summit. Four teams of high school students received top honors at the event, which concludes the competition for the 2012-2013 Spirit of Innovation Challenge. Their efforts to create a product or service to benefit humanity earned winning teams a total of more than $50,000 in cash prizes and awards. Sigma Xi is proud to present finalist teams and their mentors with Affiliate Circle Membership into your Society.

In May, Dr. Jerry Baker will join Sigma Xi members in Phoenix, Arizona for the 2013 Intel ISEF competition. The Society presents special awards to presentations that best represent team science. In addition to Affiliate Circle Membership, Sigma Xi-Intel Special Award winners will receive a cash prize.

 

Spring 2013 Grant-in-Aid of Research Winners Announced
On April 5 & 6, the Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) Committee reviewed 1,089 applications. A total of $166,809 in funding was awarded to 229 recipients. Support for the GIAR Program comes from member donations, endowment income and the National Academy of Sciences.

The recipients for this spring's Grants-in-Aid of Research have been posted to the Society's website here. The next GIAR application deadline is October 15. More information on the Sigma Xi website.
