Math, Science and Engineering Majors in Teach For America
How Can Scientists and Engineers Help to Improve
K-12 Science and Math Education?
There is little doubt that the future well-being of society depends not just on how well we educate our children, but also on how well we educate them in science, mathematics and technology. Educators and policy makers are convinced that the United States is falling dramatically behind the rest of the world in this crucial area. At least part of the problem can be attributed to an acute shortage of science and math-trained individuals in the teaching pool. Some projections of teacher turnover by the end of the next decade are as high as 70 percent. Sigma Xi members can have an enormous positive impact on the quality of the replacement teaching pool by actively encouraging good science students to consider teaching, either for a short two-year period, or for a whole career. Through a partnership with Teach For America, Sigma Xi is pleased to announce this opportunity for our members to help to change the future.
About Teach For America
Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand opportunity for children. Since its inception in 1990, approximately 17,000 exceptional individuals have joined Teach For America, directly impacting the lives of more than 2.5 million students, and taking on leadership roles as alumni to increase opportunity for children. How It Works
Teach For America selects individuals who demonstrate a strong record of achievement. These corps members undergo extensive training during summer institutes, are placed as full-time, paid teachers in urban and rural public schools, receive continued professional development, and join an ongoing support network that helps them succeed during their two years as teachers and beyond. Math, Science, and Engineers in Teach For America
Recognizing the urgent need for excellent math and science education in this country, we have launched a concerted campaign to bring increasing numbers of outstanding math and science teachers to our country's lowest-income communities. Currently, 880 corps members are teaching math and science to more than 130,000 secondary school students. Through Teach For America, math and science majors and minors use their knowledge to improve the quality of math and science education both inside and outside the classroom. Following their two-year commitment, they will join a force of leaders using the insight and understanding they gained in the classroom to work, through a variety of math and science professions, to expand opportunity for children.
