George Bugliarello Prize

Bugliarellologo Since 2007, Sigma Xi has presented the George Bugliarello Prize is awarded to a superior interdisciplinary essay, review of research or analytical article published in American Scientist magazine.

The Prize of $5,000 is awarded biennially with a goal of inspiring thoughtful discourse about how technology, human society, our biological needs and the needs of other life on our planet can be advanced.

Prospective authors are encouraged to submit an outline or abstract to the editors to determine the suitability of a proposed manuscript for publication in American Scientist. Submission Guidelines may be found online.

The prize is endowed chiefly by gifts from the Teagle and Greenwall foundations honoring George Bugliarello, University Professor and president emeritus of Polytechnic University and 1992-93 president of Sigma Xi.

George Bugliarello George Bugliarello
An engineer, educator, writer and thinker with a broad perspective and a deep concern about the world prospect, George Bugliarello has lectured and written on how humanity balances the biological, social and mechanized components of our modern existence and how a technological society achieves material prosperity while protecting human rights, the environment and the quality of our personal interaction. Bugliarello's background ranges from biomedical engineering to fluid mechanics, to computer languages and socio-technology. He is University Professor and president emeritus of Polytechnic University in New York. He holds a doctorate in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has received several honorary degrees. His service includes participation as the U.S. member of the Science for Stability Steering Group of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO and chairmanship of the Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment of the National Research Council. He has been a consultant for UNESCO and OECD and a specialist for the State Department in Venezuela and Central Africa. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and founding fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Bugliarello served as president of Sigma Xi in 1992-93.
