Statement

I have been a member of Sigma Xi since 1974, and I have served as the president of three chapters: 1) Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, 2) Clemson University and 3) SUNY Downstate Medical Center. SUNY Downstate chapter was inactive when I joined there in 2005, and I activated the chapter and nominated many colleagues and students. I have also been an active member of the Sigma Xi chapter at Alfred University. Presently I am trying to re-activate the Sigma Xi chapter at the University of Washington. I have attended many Annual Meetings of Sigma Xi, sometimes as a delegate representing a chapter. Some of my graduate students received Grants-in-Aid support from Sigma Xi.

I founded the Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference series and the International Conference on Ethics in Biology, Engineering, and Medicine. I obtained Sigma Xi’s co-sponsorship for these conferences and distributed the Sigma Xi literature (particularly membership application) several times. At this year’s 34th Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference held at Charlotte and 9th International Conference on Ethics in Biology, Engineering, and Medicine that was held in Miami, I invited the executive director of Sigma Xi to talk about Sigma Xi to the participants and encouraged them to join Sigma Xi.

At this year’s AAAS Pacific Division’s Annual Meeting at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in June, 2018, I organized a panel discussion on ethics that was part of the Sigma Xi Symposium on The Practice, Communication, and Ethics of Interdisciplinary Research. I Have also organized an ethics track at this year’s Sigma Xi Annual Meeting that will be held in October 2018 in San Francisco.

I consider Sigma Xi as one of the best multidisciplinary society in the world. It serves important functions of recognizing excellence in research, encouraging students for research, collaboration, and advocacy for research support. Unfortunately, due to more and more specialization and lack of support for membership and travel, the number of members in Sigma Xi has reduced in recent years. We need to work together to reverse this trend by nominating our colleagues and students to be Sigma Xi members. I intend to nominate the best candidates to be Sigma Xi Board of Directors who will be able to fulfill the objectives of Sigma Xi and make it a vibrant society.
