Volunteer to Serve as a Competition Judge

Sigma Xi hosts a number of student conferences and symposia throughout the year.  In addition, we partner with other organizations that host student competitions. Sigma Xi non-student members volunteer as competition judges and abstract reviewers for these events. Please consider volunteering to serve by completing our online form.

2025 Opportunities 

• Sigma Xi Student Research Showcase - An online science communication competition in which students compete for awards for outstanding virtual research presentations. Volunteers are needed to serve as abstract reviewers (January 25-March 15), mentors (April 6), and judges (April 1-10).  
• Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research - Since 1922, the Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences. Volunteers are needed to review student grant applications. Grant applications consist of consist of a 500-word proposal, budget, and recommendation form from an advisor. Reviews are done via an online platform, beginning on April 25 and ending on May 3, 2025. Most of the grant review is asynchronous, so it can be done as your schedule permits. You may review up to 20 applications.

* Please note that Sigma Xi is not able to cover travel costs for judges to attend in person events.  Local members are encouraged to volunteer.
