AMERICAN SCIENTIST FOR HIGH SCHOOLS

Sigma Xi is committed to providing pathways to solutions for global problems and fostering the public understanding of science. Providing free American Scientist magazines to high schools is our way of giving a source of credible STEM information to teachers and students.

Schools located in states where laws or proposals have challenged the integrity of science education are eligible for the program. Schools are nominated by a supporter of science education through a public nomination process. Most schools will start a year-long subscription (six issues) with the March–April issue. If your school is selected and is not able to use this resource, or to learn more about the program, please email memberinfo@sigmaxi.org.

ACTIVITY GUIDES

In addition to the magazines, the American Scientist for High Schools program features interactive, cross-curricular educational resources based on articles published in American Scientist magazine. These activity guides include lesson plans developed by teachers and are designed to meet the Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS).

Sigma Xi extends a special thank you to the following educators who created the lesson plans and developed the first activity guides for the program:
  • Juliana Berry, M.Ed., SCUC ISD
  • Shaunna Garner, M.Ed., NEISD
  • Diana Natividad, M.Ed., SAISD
  • Mary Lou O’Donnell, M.Ed., Albert Einstein Fellow
Their hard work and dedication played a key role in the launch of Sigma Xi's American Scientist for High Schools program. New guides will be created and released throughout the year.

This packet on wildfires includes five activities that engage students to observe and measure the impact of fire caused by earth’s changing environment.  Students will be introduced to new technologies used and discuss real world solutions:

  • Pre-Teach Activity: See–Think–Wonder
  • Choice Board Activity:
  • Read and Question — Coexisting with Wildfire
  • Read and Question — Coexisting with Wildfire: Vocabulary and Comprehension
  • Read and Question — The Shift to a Bird’s Eye View: Vocabulary and Comprehension

This packet on biodiversity includes six cross-curricular activities that engage students on different aspects of wildlife management and conservation efforts:

  • Pre-teach Activity: A Snapshot of Wildlife Management – Identifying key components of the evolution of wildlife management and conservation efforts
  • Activity A: Matching the Meaning – Defining science-based protocols and describing the four indicators of a wildlife management system
  • Activity B: Wildlife Poster Using Mola Art – Creation and discussion of an art design that highlights current conservation efforts and methods and how science based methods are successful
  • Activity C: Designing Measurable Objectives – Explaining the importance of indigenous stewardship when developing measurable objectives for a wildlife management program
  • Activity D: Conservation Comparisons – Creation of a double bar graph comparing success rates of wildlife conservation over a period of time
  • Activity E: PSA on Wildlife Conservation – Design and presentation of a public service announcement that relays the importance of wildlife conservation efforts

This packet on water ethics includes two cross-curricular activities that engage students on different aspects of ethical water use and conservation efforts:

  • Activity A: Stewardship of Water  – Creation of a water shed model and discussion of potentional sournces of water pollutants and the impact on water life habitats.
  • Activity B: Wildlife Poster Using Mola Art – Identification of sustainable natural resources and ethical reasoning behind current water conservation efforts.

SUPPORT THE PROGRAM

We need your help to keep your school's magazines free! American Scientist's publisher, Sigma Xi, collects generous donations each year on Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving, and uses those funds to cover the costs for the subscriptions that schools receive.

Submit a story or photo to help us show donors how their gift is helping students and teachers at your school!

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOOLS

In addition to the American Scientist for High Schools program, Sigma Xi supports students through a variety of other programs including:
  • Student Research Showcase (online competition)
  • Student Research Conference at IFoRE
  • Explorers program
  • Sigma Xi Clubs
Teachers can also connect to our research community through our Affiliate Circle. We invite your school and students to participate in all our programs.
