Sigma Xi Fellows

Key-gold-lg-White-backgroundSigma Xi has a long history of acknowledging scientific research excellence with the purpose of supporting companions in zealous research.   Each year, a select group of members will receive the added distinction of becoming a Fellow of Sigma Xi.  This distinction will be awarded on a competitive basis to members who have been recognized by their peers for exceptional contributions to the scientific enterprise.

The designation of Fellow is an honor and shall remain valid for the duration of active dues-paying Sigma Xi membership.  Fellows will be:

  • inducted during the Annual Meeting of the Society,
  • able to use the post-nominal title ‘FSX’ (signifying Fellow of Sigma Xi),
  • awarded a pin and recognition certificate,
  • featured on the Sigma Xi website, and
  • accorded other special benefits as appropriate

Consideration Criteria:

  • An active (dues-paying) full member for the last ten years continuously or a life member
  • Distinguished service to Sigma Xi (e.g. served on a Sigma Xi committee or task force, created or reinvigorated a chapter, provided exceptional service to a chapter)
  • Significant contributions to several of the following areas of the scientific enterprise:
    • research or development
    • outreach
    • teaching and curricular innovation
    • mentorship
    • science advocacy
    • leadership
  • Two letters of support from active Full or Associate members (600 words max) describing evidence of meeting the criteria listed above.

The strongest consideration will be given to nominees nominated by individuals from different organizations. Self-nominations are not accepted. Each nominator may only nominate a maximum of five people per year (with no more than two from the nominator’s institution). The nomination form shall include a statement of no more than 25 words stating: “For distinguished contributions……”

Current members of the designated Fellows selection committee and the Sigma Xi Board of Directors will not eligible for consideration. Fellowship may not be awarded posthumously unless the completed nomination packet was received prior to death.

Annual Timeline:

  • Complete nomination packets will be due February 1 of each year. The packet must consist of the nomination for Fellow form, the nominee’s curriculum vitae, and the two letters of support. These should be submitted using the online Fellows Application Form (coming soon) on the Sigma Xi website.
  • Recommendations will be made to the selection committee 
  • Fellows will be approved at the Spring Board of Directors meeting
  • Fellows will be formally inducted at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting each Fall
