Information for Students

The College and Graduate School Fair is a great opportunity to meet with representatives of higher education institutions and get your questions answered in a central location. Below are some tips to get the most out of your experience.

  1. Review the list of schools that will be in attendance
  2. Research the colleges that are of interest to you. Then, put together a tiered list of schools ranked from first to last, based of your level of interest. In addition, plan to visit schools you are unfamiliar with, but have your interests.

  3. Have a list of questions ready
Here are a few sample questions to ask college representatives:
    • What program is your college known for?
    • Does the college offer any special programs like independent study, study abroad, etc?
    • Are there any specific requirements for certain programs at the university?
    • What is the community like around the university?
    • What is the faculty-student ratio?
    • What internship opportunities are available?
    • What opportunities are available for international, underrepresented, or other students with special circumstances?
    • Does your school/program offer any flexibility in admission requirements in response to COVID-19, such as with results on standardized tests?

  4. Take notes
  5. Taking notes will ensure you don't forget each college's answer to your questions. Be sure to write about your overall impressions of your conversations.

  6. Collect contact information and send a thank you email
  7. Send the college reps you spoke with a thank you email, let them know you’re interested in their school, and ask any follow-up questions you have. When contacting colleges, keep it short, polite, and professional.

The virtual Sigma Xi College and Graduate School Fair is great way to connect with the best and brightest high school and undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in science, technology, engineering, math, or health professions. The fair is held jointly with the Sigma Xi Student Research Conference, an annual gathering for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to present their research and engage with professional scientists and engineers.

The 2020 online conference will welcome 300–400 high achieving students from schools and colleges across the United States. Students will virtually contribute oral and poster presentations in 13 research disciplines. High school participants have been alums of nationally and internationally recognized competitions such as the Regeneron (formerly Intel) Science and Engineering Fair and Conrad Challenge.
