While a postdoc, I joined Sigma Xi as a Life Member, because I was impressed by the organization’s emphasis on excellence in scientific research.  I was a postdoc with Nobel Laureate H. C. Brown at Purdue, so we all focused greatly on scientific research.  Common interests between Sigma Xi and myself ensured that I would want to belong to Sigma Xi for life.  Although the major scientific and educational issues have changed, Sigma Xi must become agile and pivot to address them.

Sigma Xi should continue to partner with other scientific organizations on major scientific issues, helping to protect science against interference from politics and distortion.  Sigma Xi has always stood for high ethics, integrity, and excellence in science and research.  Sigma Xi members are experts, who can serve as advisors on current and changing scientific and educational issues.

Recently, the impact of misconduct in scientific research, inappropriate behavior, and dishonesty in scientists in the news is increasing.  The impact on the public perception of science and scientists is further increasing due ready availability of photos or even videos capturing inappropriate behavior.  Taking a leadership role in controversial issues of science and education requires courage and a careful sense of fairness.  Leadership to avoid such situations will be challenging, but success would strengthen future scientists and science.  Sigma Xi members should be capable of this.

Sigma Xi can be a force for the best in science, and its members are role models for the best in scientists.

I have been a member of Sigma Xi since 1995 and have served as Illinois Tech Chapter President, North Central Director and on various committees (Awards, Finance, and Nominations).  Sigma Xi occupies an important place among scientific societies because, as a Chapter-based organization, it has access to young people who are beginning their careers not only in science but in many other, non-scientific areas. No matter where their professions will lead them, Sigma Xi has a unique opportunity to keep them engaged in the scientific world. It would be an honor for me to help make this vision a reality as President.

From my involvement with the Society, I have seen the constant struggles with membership and funding issues in general.  While the membership numbers have been turning around thanks to outstanding efforts by the National Headquarters Staff, there is more that can be done at the Chapter level.  Without ignoring our traditional membership, I believe that the key to more healthy chapters at research intensive institutions is to engage undergraduate students who have participated in research experiences as well as graduate students as soon as they pass to candidacy.  Student participation in the Chapters can bring new energy and ideas, and the more they participate, the more likely they are to continue membership beyond graduation.  Once we have these new, young members, it becomes essential to understand how Sigma Xi can best serve their needs and keep them engaged in science throughout their lifetime.

Statement

I enjoy immensely pursuing basic research in astrophysics, a discipline that has changed profoundly during my career and continues to surprise us. This motivates me in teaching, training, and mentoring many high quality students and postdocs, and in turn I draw inspiration from these fresh minds. Professionally, I have worked to establish “crucibles of creativity,” whether workshops, scientific meetings, summer schools, international research collaborations, or entire new institutes, so that researchers are not only nurtured and sustained but also enabled to advance through individual and collaborative effort and insight.

A devotee of Moral Ambition, I am especially committed to an interdisciplinary “School of Cosmic Future” initiative at the University of Toronto (UofT) that has attracted funding to address how identified existential threats (e.g., nuclear weapons, climate change, artificial general intelligence) might be avoided, motivated by the cosmic perspective that humanity is (just) a recent naturally evolved feature of terrestrial evolution with, starkly, no guarantee of continuation. I am convinced that science has an essential role, yet clearly the very pursuit of science is under attack. My view is that in these unprecedented times, the myriad activities of Sigma Xi take on heightened importance. I have growing experience with Sigma Xi through re-activating the UofT Chapter.

Collaborating as a Director, I would hope to enhance my impact further. I believe that I have the requisite experience to make this plausible. Over my 54-year career at UofT, I have sustained engagement with the astrophysics community, to ensure that the discipline had the profile and support required to thrive nationally and internationally. For example, I have served on evaluation panels within the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA); for two terms on the Advisory Board for the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics; as chair and again as member of the Joint Commi#ee for Space Astronomy (CASCA and the CSA); and on the college of reviewers for Canada Research Chairs. Internationally, I have been an active member the Core Science Team for the Planck Satellite, and the HIFI and SPIRE Science Teams for the Herschel Space Observatory (ESA, with NASA and CSA). Since 2002, I have been a member of the NIRCam Science Team for the James Webb Space Telescope, successor to the Hubble Space Telescope (NASA, with ESA and CSA).

I have been entrusted with key leadership roles, within the UofT as department chair and institute director. On the executive of CASCA, I served on the Board of Directors (1986-1989), as Vice-President, President, and Past-President (2003-2010) and as co-chair of the Coalition for Canadian Astronomy (2005-2008). I was recognized with the biennial Executive Award of CASCA (2014). I was a founding advisor in 2003 for the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy that now promotes to government the large-capital astronomical facilities that are vital for sustained excellence and international competitiveness of astronomical research in Canada.

Within the international Planck Collaboration, I was selected as the longtime co-lead of Working Group 7 (Galactic and Solar System Science, with some 120 members), which produced over 100 Planck publications, and as a member of the Editorial Board responsible for all collaboration
papers, from conception through internal review. While leading Dunlap in 2013, I enthusiastically backed the West African International Summer School for Young Astronomers spearheaded by CITA postdoc Linda Strubbe. At the time, I advised the International Astronomical Union on building an Office of Astronomy for Development, rather than an Office for the Development of Astronomy; fortunately the first won out. WAISSYA, very much in this spirit, has now grown into the Pan-African School for Emerging Astronomers.

Statement

Sigma Xi is widely recognised for its prestige and enduring excellence as a distinguished scientific honour society. Its legacy of promoting research integrity, scientific advancement, and collaboration has positioned it as a beacon for scholars across disciplines and generations. For many scientists around the world, membership represents not only recognition of achievement but also a commitment to the highest standards of inquiry and service to humanity.

To sustain and expand this legacy, Sigma Xi must continue to evolve in response to the changing dynamics of global society. It is essential that the Society is not only known for its excellence, but also seen as an inclusive, responsive, and forward-thinking organisation. This means actively listening to diverse voices, particularly from around the world. True leadership today requires intentional inclusivity—ensuring that opportunities, recognition, and resources are accessible to all, regardless of geography, gender, or socioeconomic status.

As an academic leader and founder of Young Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (YWISET), I bring a strong understanding of the barriers faced by emerging scientists, especially women and those in international regions. Through mentoring over 500 women globally, I have seen how limited access to funding, lack of mentors, and unclear career pathways can hinder progress. These challenges require deliberate and sustained action to ensure that talent is not lost but nurtured.

My commitment to Sigma Xi is demonstrated through my service as an elected member of the Nominations Committee for three years. In this role, I contributed to reviewing and recommending candidates for leadership positions, ensuring fairness, transparency, and the selection of individuals who uphold the Society’s values. I also served on the Outreach Committee, supporting initiatives to strengthen member engagement and expand Sigma Xi’s visibility across diverse and international communities. These experiences have given me valuable insight into the Society’s governance and the importance of inclusive engagement.
In seeking the role of Director, I offer strategic leadership, governance experience, and a global perspective. I am committed to strengthening Sigma Xi’s international presence by supporting the development of chapters in underrepresented regions, particularly in the international arena. Establishing and sustaining these chapters will help demonstrate that Sigma Xi is truly a global society, while also creating platforms for local scientific collaboration and growth.

I will also advocate for expanding access to grants, funding opportunities, and mentorship programmes. While Sigma Xi has a strong tradition of supporting early-career researchers, there is an opportunity to extend this support further to scientists internationally. Creating structured mentorship networks that connect experienced researchers with early-career scientists globally will help bridge gaps in guidance and professional development.
In addition, I aim to enhance member engagement by building inclusive networks that encourage participation across all career stages and regions. My experience in outreach and mentoring positions me to contribute to initiatives that increase visibility and ensure that Sigma Xi’s impact extends beyond academia into wider society.

I am also committed to strengthening governance processes by promoting transparency, accountability, and diversity in leadership. Building on my experience within the Nominations Committee and also from my experience as a Director and Trustee of an Educational Trust, I will support systems that ensure fair representation and uphold the highest standards of integrity.
In conclusion, Sigma Xi has a unique opportunity to build on its distinguished history while embracing a more inclusive and globally representative future. Through strategic leadership, expanded access to opportunities, and stronger engagement with international communities, the Society can continue to inspire excellence and innovation. I am committed to contributing to this vision and supporting Sigma Xi’s mission to foster a diverse and thriving scientific community worldwide.

Statement

The research landscape is evolving rapidly — AI is reshaping workflows, funding models are shifting, and early-career researchers are building professional identities in new ways. Sigma Xi has always adapted to serve the research community through these kinds of transitions, and I want to help accelerate that continued evolution. I believe the society’s next chapter depends on three things: expanding how we engage researchers across digital and in-person channels, applying technology to scale our impact beyond what volunteer effort alone can sustain, and maintaining the financial discipline to fund that growth.

I have spent 25+ years building and leading technology organizations that solve complex problems at global scale. I know how to take a mission and build the systems, teams, and strategy to execute it. That operational perspective is what I hope to contribute to this board.
My philosophy is straightforward: build on what’s working and bring practical experience from the technology sector to help the society reach more researchers, more effectively. The next generation of members is digital-native, interdisciplinary, and navigating careers shaped by AI. The society benefits from board members who work in that world daily and can bring that context to governance decisions.

Statement

I am honored to be nominated for Sigma Xi North Central Regional Director. This position requires being a steward of Sigma Xi’s resources and an ambassador to the scientific community and the general public. As a society, we are faced with a number of pernicious problems that science and engineering are capable of addressing. While we have plenty of reliable information on, for example, public health, climate and the environmental, and an inequitable distribution of resources, collective action is lacking. The general perception is that few people understand and care about these issues, while reality is the opposite: most people care. This false social reality or pluralistic ignorance is a barrier to shaping public opinion and enacting reasonable public policy.

We need more thought leaders and fewer influencers. My vision is to maintain Sigma Xi as a platform on the vanguard of sharing scientific and engineering information and motivate Sigma Xi members (and the general public) to take action.

Most Sigma Xi members join as a graduate student or postdoctoral, but not every science and engineering student can have an academic position, let alone desires one. Sigma Xi local chapters are not evenly distributed and most tend to be at universities (a few are at national laboratories or industry sites.) Thus, many members do not have access to regular programming and only have access via American Scientist or social media. Recent efforts to host hybrid events at Sigma Xi headquarters (with virtual sharing) and the monthly virtual “Happy Hour” are commendable and the schedule can be expanded. The recent coronavirus pandemic caused many previous in-person events to become virtual, and now climate and other travel restrictions make virtual events more popular. Sigma Xi’s Annual Meeting is one such example. Another is AICHE’s Virtual Local Section, where typically 100+ attendees logon each month for a presentation and discussion on relevant topics.

My leadership training and philosophy are based on the “tent” model, with the central tent pole being character and supported by focus on results, personal capability, leading change, and interpersonal skills. Currently, I am not at a large organization/institution with an infrastructure and many colleagues; my day-to-day activities are largely solo with typically small groups (clients.) I am an active member (officer/director) in a number of organizations and understand what it required for a team to work on complex problems. My decisions and actions in life are shaped by my personal duty of care, loyalty, and fiduciary in all matters I touch.

My previous experience with Sigma Xi programs includes: 1) Sigma Xi, life member, 1988; 2) President of Ohio Northern University Sigma Xi Club, 1991-92. 3) Delegate at Sigma Xi 1991 Annual Meeting. 4) Attended Purdue University Chapter events 1989-94. 5) Organizer/Convener of workshop “Business Not Taught in Science Class, at Sigma Xi 2019 Annual Meeting in Madison, Wisconsin. 6) Delegate at Sigma Xi 2020 Annual Meeting (virtual, November 5-8) representing Sigma Xi Northern Michigan University. 7) Regular attendance at Sigma Xi monthly “Happy Hour” and other virtual events. My experience in governance of other professional societies and organizing technical symposia will be useful in guiding Sigma Xi programs.

My direct experience with Sigma Xi activity has been light, because I spend most of my time in an area without an active Sigma Xi chapter. One of the challenges facing Sigma Xi is retention of members without a nearby active chapter or with other barriers for participation. I look forward to working with the Sigma Xi Board of Directors, staff, and members to accomplish our common
goals.

Statement

I am honored to be considered for the role of Director for the North Central Region of Sigma Xi. My vision for this role is grounded in a simple principle: scientific excellence must be both rigorous and accessible, and Sigma Xi is uniquely positioned to bridge discovery, translation, and community impact across disciplines and institutions.

My philosophy is shaped by my career as a physician-scientist in hematology, oncology, and blood and marrow transplantation, where I have worked across academic and community settings. I have seen firsthand that transformative science often emerges not only from well-resourced centers, but also from environments where collaboration, curiosity, and persistence overcome structural limitations. I believe Sigma Xi can play a critical role in amplifying these voices—supporting investigators who are building programs, not just inheriting them, and fostering connections that accelerate the translation of scientific ideas into meaningful outcomes.

As Clinical Director of a Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cell Therapy Program, I have led efforts to develop clinical and translational initiatives in complex, resource-constrained environments. My experience includes the design and execution of investigator-initiated trials, participation in national and international research collaborations, and mentorship of trainees and junior faculty. I have also served as an inspector and educator for the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), contributing to quality standards and program development across institutions. These roles have reinforced my commitment to scientific rigor, accountability, and the dissemination of best practices.

If elected, I would focus on three priorities for the North Central Region. First, strengthening engagement across academic, community, and industry settings by creating forums that encourage collaboration beyond traditional silos. Second, supporting early-career investigators through mentorship, visibility, and practical guidance on building sustainable research programs. Third, promoting translational science by highlighting work that bridges laboratory discovery and real-world application, particularly in settings where resources may be limited but innovation is high.

My involvement with Sigma Xi reflects my belief in its mission to honor excellence in scientific research and to encourage the spirit of inquiry. As a member, I have valued the Society’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific integrity. I look forward to contributing more actively to its programs by fostering regional initiatives that engage members meaningfully and expand the Society’s reach.

Sigma Xi has a distinguished legacy of advancing science in service of society. At a time when the scientific enterprise faces both unprecedented opportunity and significant challenges, I believe we must be intentional about building inclusive, collaborative, and forward-looking communities. I would be honored to contribute to this mission and to serve the North Central Region in this capacity.

Statement

Sigma Xi is an interdisciplinary science organization supporting integrity, rigor, and scientific outreach. My first experience with Sigma Xi was during grad school when the nearby chapter organized judges for the Houston Science and Engineering fair.  I volunteered and met several individuals who opened my mind to different ways to judge a science poster.  During my time as a postdoctoral fellow, a mentee in my post-doctoral lab applied and secured a Sigma Xi award.  Several months later, a colleague recommended participating in the Rice University - Texas Medical Center chapter, with a call to try to recruit newer members early in their research career that would benefit from Sigma Xi mentorship.  A year later I found myself running for Treasurer of the same chapter. Since then, I have been honored with meeting a variety of individuals all working towards better science, from middle school science fair winners to post-graduate scholars.   I am proud of how Sigma Xi emphasizes ethical scholarship and integrity, and I believe this emphasis connects our members through common goals of scholarship and mentorship. I love the diversity of thinkers found in this organization and I am dedicated to expanding my chapter to help support science professionals of all domains in my region.
I am also strongly supportive of open and reproducible science.  As scientific trust has eroded in recent years, it is important to maintain transparency in the scientific process. This transparency helps foster trust with the public, but it also allows outside individuals to add to the scientific process and increases scientific outreach. With the development of AI, it is essential to be open about how science is performed and communicated.  As the world moves forward with artificial intelligence tools, Sigma Xi is positioned to help shape how we utilize these tools as thought partners to enhance questions in science and apply those answers towards complex societal issues.

I see Sigma Xi as an organization that recognizes excellent scientists wanting to improve the world for everyone. As a future director I am excited to connect past members with newer members to continue enhancing scholarship and mentorship within and beyond the scientific community.

Unbiased fact-based research is under attack. It is a critical moment for researchers world-wide. Sigma XI is well placed to help fight the trend. More than ever, governments are supporting result-oriented research or “contracted conclusions”. There is a lack of an altruistic long term view amongst both those in power and the general population. AI, if carefully applied, could be a boon to research. However, it could as well be a major threat given its ability to hallucinate and present false, unsubstantiated, information in a confident, seemingly truthful manner, overriding the factual reality.

As one of the world‘s largest and longest surviving institutions supporting research to benefit all of humanity, Sigma Xi has the ability to have an impact, through interaction with and the education of politicians that control the purse strings and the public at large, encouraging politicians to do the right thing. The long-term effects of research must be explained clearly to the general population, who as a rule, do not understand the importance of basic and applied research. Most do not connect the fiscal and industrial policy decisions of the 60’s and early 70’s in the US to the creation of a robust ecosystem that created the electronics industries that exist today. They do not understand that the reversal of some of those policies, many of whom, in the name of short-term gain, have shortchanged forward looking research, allowing the US to fall behind in many critical areas. Without the results of that past research the country would be nowhere today.

As the Current President of the San Diego Chapter, I am well aware of how a vibrant, healthy atmosphere of ‘zealous companionship’ in science can be created. I have been involved in the research community for decades. Our Chapter includes many multidisciplinary organizations in the area pursuing research activities including:
  • Two major universities (UCSD & SDSU), and two other universities with active research programs (USD & CalState San Marcos)
  • Government Labs (Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific and others)
  • Multiple Companies with Major Research Efforts in Electronics and Biotech (Qualcomm, Salk Institute, Pfizer …)
Innovation thrives when people of different disciplines exchange ideas in an informal setting. Events at various science research sites in the San Diego area or other chapter events provide one of the few opportunities for such exchange, including even with the public at large, as well as the opportunity to understand how their work fits into the bigger picture. Past San Diego Chapter events have included:
  • Veterans Administration Hospital: MRI and CAT scan diagnostic devices
  • General Atomics: Fusion energy research tokomak machine
  • Sea World, Hubbs Research Institute: Research tanks for conserving and renewing marine life
  • Scripps Institution of Oceanology: Optical studies of global algae blooms
  • Fleet Science Center, Planetarium: Projectors and programs for astronomy shows
  • Tijuana, Mexico lab: Husbandry and commercialization, tilapia fish
  • San Diego In Vitro Fertilization lab: Techniques and science data for IVF
  • San Diego State University, Astronomy Department: Hamburger/hot dog picnic and evening observation session at the Mount Laguna Observatory for Sigma Xi members and families
  • Candid evening with Congressman Dr. Bob Filner (Fantastic educational exchange!)
Outreach should also be another important part of Sigma Xi’s activities, through interaction at schools, science fairs, and robotics competitions, all of which I have done.
If elected, I intend to vigorously promote thrusts such as the above within the Society and its chapters, enlisting the help of Headquarters and the explicit outreach of all Directors with their constituent chapters in order to strengthen andto better engender respect in the larger community for the research community. I would appreciate your vote.

My philosophy as a researcher has always been simple: ask questions that actually matter to patients, and be honest about what the data does and does not tell you. That is easier said than done in clinical research, where the pressure to publish can sometimes outpace the discipline to get things right. I have tried throughout my career to prioritize rigor over speed, and I think that instinct aligns closely with what Sigma Xi stands for which is honoring integrity and trustworthiness in the research enterprise above all else.

My research began during my postgraduate training in Oral Pathology in India, where I developed an interest in cytogenetic biomarkers as early indicators of cancer risk. My most cited work, published in the Journal of Cytology in 2012, addressed a methodological problem in micronucleus assay interpretation that I kept running into in the literature which was the inability to reliably distinguish biologically meaningful micronuclei from background cellular variation. That work has been cited over seventy times by investigators internationally, which tells me it addressed a real gap rather than an imaginary one. I have also contributed case reports documenting rare odontogenic pathology, including what was at the time the only reported bilateral occurrence of glandular odontogenic cyst in the posterior maxilla in the indexed literature. More recently my research interests have expanded into sedation safety, anesthesia outcomes, and oral public health access through teledentistry, reflecting both my clinical trajectory and a genuine belief that research should follow where the unresolved problems are, not where the career incentives point.

I currently hold 11 PubMed-indexed publications, an international textbook chapter, and serve as a peer reviewer and editorial board member for journals including the Journal of the American Dental Association. I am beginning a Master of Science residency in Dental Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University in 2026, where I intend to continue building a research program focused on perioperative safety and access to anesthesia-supported care for underserved populations.

I want to be transparent that I have no prior experience with Sigma Xi programs or chapters and have not previously participated in Sigma Xi events, grants, or initiatives. What I can say honestly is that the values I read in the Society's mission — fostering integrity in science, promoting companionship among researchers across disciplines, and improving the human condition through rigorous inquiry are values I have tried to live by in my own work, even before I knew they had a name attached to them.

If elected, I would look forward to engaging with the Sigma Xi community in a way that reflects those values — particularly in mentoring younger researchers navigating the same tension between clinical practice and scientific inquiry that has defined my own career.

Associate Director: Northeast Region

Three-year term, beginning July 1, 2027

Matthew Stewart

Northeast Region
BIOGRAPHY

Statement

I am running for Associate Director of the Northeast Region because I believe Sigma Xi has a unique opportunity to strengthen how it supports early-career and mid-career researchers navigating the intersection of scientific research and real-world impact.

My own career has been shaped by moving between academic research and applied practice. I did my PhD and postdoc at Harvard, where I published in top scientific venues and co-created an educational program that reached over 100,000 learners. I then became CTO of an AI startup, where I learned firsthand how research translates into products that serve real customers and meet regulatory requirements. I now lead AI research at a healthcare company building clinical AI tools for substance use treatment. At every stage I have seen how the boundaries between disciplines and between academia and industry are becoming more porous, and how researchers need support navigating those transitions.

This perspective informs what I would bring to the Associate Director role. I want to focus on three things. First, I want to help revitalize chapters in the Northeast Region by connecting them to the broader professional ecosystem. Many Sigma Xi chapters are anchored at universities but have limited engagement with industry and government researchers in their area. I have experience bridging these communities through my work organizing workshops and seminars that brought together academics, engineers from companies like Google and Qualcomm, and government stakeholders including NIST. I would work with chapter leaders to create programming that draws in members from industry and national labs, not just faculty and students.

Second, I want to support the Society's mission around research ethics and integrity by bringing my experience in responsible AI governance. I have published research on AI accountability at ACM FAccT, served as an invited expert for the European Commission's AI4POL Horizon Europe study on high-risk AI, and sit on the RSS Data Ethics and Governance Section Committee. Questions about research integrity, algorithmic fairness, and the responsible use of AI in science are increasingly central to every discipline. I would advocate for Sigma Xi to engage more actively with these questions through its programming, its publications in American Scientist, and its chapter activities.

Third, I want to help the Society recruit and retain members who might not follow traditional academic career paths. The research workforce is changing. Many talented scientists and engineers work in industry, startups, government agencies, and nonprofits. Sigma Xi's mission of promoting research excellence is just as relevant to these researchers as it is to tenure-track faculty, but our chapter structures and programming do not always reflect that. As someone who has worked in academia, startups, and industry, I understand the different needs of these communities and would work to make Sigma Xi feel like home for all of them.

I bring relevant organizational experience to this role. I currently serve in elected leadership positions in two IEEE chapters in the Boston Section, sit on committees for IEEE, INFORMS, and the Royal Statistical Society, and have co-organized research workshops and conferences. I understand how professional societies operate and how to get things done within volunteer-driven governance structures.

Sigma Xi elected me as a Full Member through the Harvard chapter, and that recognition meant a great deal to me. I want to give back to the Society that honored my work by helping it grow stronger, more inclusive, and more connected to the full breadth of scientific research happening in the Northeast Region and beyond.

Statement

I think advances in science and engineering are accomplished through teamwork, creativity, ethics, and lifelong education. During my professional journey, I have enjoyed trying to connect the worlds of research and industry. I have always tried to take new technology and apply it to solving practical problems. However, I also try to help those around me create an atmosphere where sharing what you know, mentoring others, and pursuing excellence in your profession can take place. Enable others and your organization to turn thoughts into action and accomplish something that will have a positive impact on our industry and society.

I am a Principal Architect at Hakkoda (IBM Company) with over 18 years of experience in data engineering, cloud architecture, Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, and modernization of legacy enterprise technologies. In my current role, I work with executive stakeholders to architect and implement enterprise data platforms, cloud transformations, and AI technologies to help organizations make smarter decisions, run more efficiently, and innovate at speed. Previously, I worked in leadership positions at Cisco Systems, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Think Estate Solutions. My contributions at these organizations ranged from the architect and leader of large technical teams to the developer of innovative new technologies.

I have stayed active in research and technical writing, in addition to my day job. I am an inventor of 1 patent (Explainable AI for Cloud Security), author of 1 book (Artificial Intelligence Driving Cloud Security Automation), and author of several technical publications (Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Data Engineering). I have also participated as a research paper reviewer, technical book reviewer, conference speaker, panelist, mentor, and judge for several national and international technology and innovation based programs. Engaging in these activities has allowed me to meet many wonderful researchers and professionals and has solidified my belief that we can accomplish more when we all come together and share our ideas and work to solve practical problems.

I am excited to get involved with Sigma Xi and look forward to helping the Society achieve its goals. I strongly believe in Sigma Xi's mission to recognize and promote excellence in research, encourage the scientific endeavor, and educate and aid future scientists and engineers. Professional societies allow those with common interests to come together and help one another. They create a space where we can mentor, collaborate, and share what we know with others around the world.

If selected to serve on a committee, I would like to help promote more collaboration between researchers in different fields of study. I would also encourage more collaboration between academia and industry professionals and find ways to open more opportunities for students and professionals just starting their careers. Additionally, I would like to help promote and support emerging fields of research and technology such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cloud Computing, and Cybersecurity. Lastly, I want to encourage research that will have an impact on complex real-world problems.

I have always held that we should lead by example. How will you know that you are a leader if you do not inspire others to follow? How will the next generation know that they should strive to be mentors and educators if you are not willing to help them? During my time with Sigma Xi, I hope to use my technical knowledge and experience along with my drive to help others grow as professionals to help promote Sigma Xi's mission.

Statement

My vision for the Sigma Xi Nominations Committee is rooted in the "Science of Interoperability" - the belief that the future of scientific leadership lies in bridging the gap between foundational academic research and industrial-scale implementation. As we enter an era where artificial intelligence and distributed systems redefine the boundaries of discovery, the Society must identify leaders who embody both technical rigor and the ethical responsibility required to scale innovation safely. My philosophy is that excellence is not merely a measure of individual output, but a commitment to fostering a unified, cross-disciplinary ecosystem where research integrity serves as the "invisible plumbing" for global progress.

My professional journey has been defined by the vetting and architectural scaling of complex systems. Currently, as an AI Infrastructure Architect at Google, I lead the architectural scaling of distributed systems that support billions of users. This role requires me to act as a primary technical authority, ensuring that global platforms remain resilient and grounded in the highest standards of research and engineering.

Prior to my work at Google, I served as a key contributor to the SuperGLU (Super Generalized Learning Utilities) framework at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. This DoD-funded project achieved Major Significance when it was adopted as a national standard by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in their Design Recommendations for Intelligent Tutoring Systems. Solving the "interoperability silo" for national training systems gave me deep experience in establishing and vetting the technical benchmarks that define a field.

Furthermore, I have developed extensive expertise in the "Judging of the Work of Others" through high-volume vetting roles. I recently evaluated 50 global AI innovations as an expert juror for the 2026 Globee AI Awards and was selected as part of a restricted cohort to judge LA Hacks 2026 at UCLA. As an ACM Certified Reviewer for flagship journals such as Transactions on Autonomous and Adaptive Systems (TAAS), I am consistently entrusted to vet the original research of doctoral-level peers. These experiences have honed my ability to identify high-caliber talent and leadership potential across both industrial and scientific sectors.

Since my induction as a Full Member, I have been an active contributor to the Sigma Xi mission of fostering research excellence. I have worked closely with the Society’s leadership to bridge industry and academia, resulting in a forthcoming Member Spotlight in Sigma Xi Today.
My commitment to the Society’s programming includes:
● IFoRE 2026: I have submitted a session proposal for the "Industry and Entrepreneurship" track titled "The Architecture of Interoperability: Scaling Ethical AI Infrastructure from DoD Research to Global Industrial Deployment".
● Student Research Showcase: I have been invited by the Director of Science Communications to serve as a Judge for student papers, where I look forward to vetting the next generation of scientific talent.

By serving on the Nominations Committee, I aim to apply my experience in global architectural scaling and high-level peer review to help Sigma Xi identify a diverse, world-class slate of leaders who will guide the Society toward the next frontier of scientific excellence.

Statement

I believe that strong scientific organizations are built upon thoughtful, inclusive, and transparent leadership. My vision for Sigma Xi is to ensure that its future leadership reflects the breadth of excellence within the scientific community while embracing diverse perspectives, emerging disciplines, and global collaboration. As a Representative on the Nominations Committee, I would work to identify leaders who not only demonstrate scientific distinction but also embody integrity, service, collaboration, and a commitment to advancing research for the benefit of society.

My leadership philosophy is grounded in fairness, objectivity, and service. The responsibility of a nominations committee extends beyond filling leadership positions; it is about cultivating a pipeline of individuals who can guide the Society through evolving scientific and technological landscapes. I believe that effective leadership requires balancing experience with fresh perspectives, promoting diversity across disciplines and career stages, and encouraging participation from members who are committed to Sigma Xi's mission of honoring excellence in scientific research and fostering collaboration across the global research community.

Professionally, I bring nearly two decades of experience as a software engineer, cloud architect, researcher, author, inventor, and technology leader. My career has combined scientific research with practical innovation, including peer-reviewed publications in artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, enterprise architecture, and financial technology. I have served as a reviewer for leading international journals and conferences, chaired technical sessions, delivered invited presentations, authored technical books, and contributed to international intellectual property. In addition, my experience mentoring students, judging global innovation competitions, and leading professional communities has strengthened my ability to recognize leadership potential, evaluate diverse accomplishments, and support individuals from a broad range of scientific backgrounds.

My experience with Sigma Xi has reinforced my appreciation for its commitment to scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional service. I value the Society's role in recognizing outstanding researchers, supporting scientific integrity, and fostering opportunities for mentorship and engagement across generations of scientists. These principles closely align with my own commitment to advancing research, promoting collaboration, and encouraging the next generation of scientific leaders.

If elected as a Representative on the Nominations Committee, I will approach the role with impartiality, transparency, and dedication. I will work to identify and recommend leaders who possess the vision, integrity, and commitment needed to strengthen Sigma Xi and advance its mission. My goal is to help ensure that the Society's future leadership reflects the highest standards of scientific excellence while positioning Sigma Xi for continued growth and impact in an increasingly interdisciplinary and global research environment.

I have been an active member of Sigma Xi since 2020 and have acted as a member of the Qualifications and Membership since 2025. My interest in becoming more involved in Sigma Xi stems from an interest in maintaining a high degree of scientific literacy in the United States, particularly Florida (as a current resident). At the University level I have a swath of experience in reporting departmental information to the Dean and approving courses via the College curriculum committee. I have been actively engaged in Sigma Xi scholarship at the University level since becoming president in 2023. One of my goals has been to place undergraduates interested in research into an appropriate laboratory or computational setting with a faculty mentor. As a PhD granting institution, Nova Southeastern University has allowed me to design and implement changes to both the traditional classroom teaching (through production of two new classes) and the more research based work that many students are so eager to get (development of two practicum courses based around research methods). I feel that I have a good understanding of PhD granting universities that are non-for-profit private in scope; this includes many of the limitations and hurdles that come along with lack of funding at the state level. A small but well-attended, biology forward University like NSU has a unique perspective on the current academic landscape and will likely add novel contributions to discussions of improvements and the future of Sigma Xi.

My exposure to iFORE and Sigma Xi over the past three years has been incredibly valuable to my maturation as an academic and an educator. Having the ability to speak with others within the Sigma Xi community about manners related to student success, funding, legislative hurdles, and academic networking has been incredibly valuable. My goal is to understand the success of the smaller private Universities involved with Sigma Xi and bring those ideas back to NSU but also to express how professors at a primarily post-grad attending school have been able to ensure student success and fund projects on a sometimes shoestring budget. I am interested in learning more about the innerworkings of Sigma Xi and understanding how I can best contribute using my expertise as a teacher and researcher. Ultimately, I plan to continue to uphold the mission of Sigma Xi as a member of this committee through an open mind and a positive attitude. We all hope to make Sigma Xi better and I’d like to do my part in protecting the future of the Society and scientific research as a whole.

Sigma Xi’s ability to recognize and elevate scientific excellence depends on a nomination process that is rigorous, forward-looking, and reflective of the evolving nature of impactful research. I am seeking election to the Nominations Committee with a focused commitment: to ensure that this process continues to identify individuals whose work not only meets the highest standards of scholarship but also meaningfully advances science and society.

My philosophy is grounded in three core principles: rigor, relevance, and representation. Scientific recognition must remain firmly merit-based, while also adapting to reflect how modern science is conducted—collaboratively, across disciplines, and with increasing emphasis on translational and real-world outcomes. The Nominations Committee plays a central role in ensuring that deserving individuals are identified within this broader and rapidly evolving landscape.

My experience provides a strong foundation for this responsibility. As a physician-scientist with over 90 peer-reviewed publications, predominantly as first and corresponding author, I have extensive experience in generating and critically evaluating scientific work. My editorial roles as Associate Editor and Guest Editor, along with peer review for multiple international journals, have strengthened my ability to assess originality, methodological rigor, and broader scientific significance.

My selection as an Invited Question Writer for the American Board of Internal Medicine reflects national-level trust in my ability to evaluate expertise and define standards of knowledge—skills directly aligned with the responsibilities of the Nominations Committee. In addition, my work at the intersection of science, policy, and healthcare innovation informs my perspective on impact. As a Physician Advisor to HHS PTAC and invited speaker on data-driven patient empowerment, I have contributed to evaluating healthcare models and innovation at a national level. These experiences allow me to assess scientific contributions not only for academic merit, but for their scalability, translational value, and societal relevance.

Through leadership roles within professional societies, including serving as a Voting Member of the SCAI International Committee, I have developed experience in strategic evaluation, consensus-building, and leadership decision-making—essential qualities for effective committee service.

As a Sigma Xi member, I believe there is an important opportunity to further strengthen the nomination process by broadening its scope while maintaining its rigor. High-impact contributions increasingly emerge from interdisciplinary research, early-career investigators, and globally diverse communities. If elected, I will advocate for proactively identifying such candidates and ensuring that innovation is recognized regardless of traditional visibility.
I am particularly committed to ensuring that translational science, implementation science, and technology-driven innovation are appropriately represented, as these areas are central to the future of scientific progress.

I bring a disciplined, objective, and forward-looking approach to this role. My goal is to contribute to a nomination process that is comprehensive and aligned with Sigma Xi’s legacy of excellence—while strengthening its relevance for the future.

I am honored to submit my self-nomination for Representative on the Committee on Nominations, Southeast Region. I view this role as an opportunity to contribute to Sigma Xi’s mission by helping identify thoughtful, capable, and forward-looking leaders who can strengthen the Society and support its continued relevance across disciplines and career stages.

My vision for Sigma Xi is rooted in three principles: scientific excellence, broad engagement, and responsible leadership. Sigma Xi occupies a valuable place in the research community because it brings together scientists and engineers across fields, institutions, and generations. In a time when research communities face increasing fragmentation, rapid technological change, and growing public scrutiny, organizations such as Sigma Xi play an especially important role in promoting integrity, collegiality, and shared commitment to discovery.

If elected, I would approach service on the Committee on Nominations with care, fairness, and a broad view of the Society’s needs. The nomination process is not merely procedural; it helps shape the future direction of the organization. I would seek nominees who combine scientific distinction with sound judgment, collaborative spirit, and a demonstrated willingness to serve the broader research community. I would also value balanced representation across disciplines, institutional settings, and professional backgrounds, while maintaining the high standards expected of Sigma Xi leadership.

My professional experience has prepared me well for this role. As a faculty member and researcher, I have worked across statistics, applied mathematics, data science, and interdisciplinary collaborations. I have served in editorial roles, on professional committees, and in academic leadership and mentoring capacities. These experiences have given me the opportunity to evaluate colleagues not only on scholarly accomplishment, but also on reliability, professionalism, and service-minded leadership.

My prior and ongoing professional service has reinforced the importance of careful nominations work: strong organizations depend on leaders who are not only accomplished, but also committed to stewardship, inclusiveness, and the long-term health of the scientific enterprise. I would bring that perspective to the Committee’s work.

My experience with Sigma Xi reflects my respect for its mission as a multidisciplinary scientific honor society dedicated to advancing research and supporting excellence in science and engineering. I would be pleased to contribute to that mission in a constructive and thoughtful way through service on the Committee on Nominations.
