Background Information

Statement

I first heard of Sigma Xi my freshman year of college. I submitted an independent study project for an undergraduate award and won. I don’t think I gave the organization much thought until I came to what is now Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and a coworker asked me to help them revitalize our local Chapter. William R. Wiley was president elect of Sigma Xi and our Laboratory Director. He unfortunately died before becoming president of Sigma Xi. That was over 25 years ago. Our local chapter has waxed and waned over the years. I have especially enjoyed interacting with are areas many retired scientists who appreciate the opportunity to socialize and “talk shop”. My institution also has many students and Post Doctorial researchers.

Over the years I have hosted about 25 students, a few teachers and sat on several PhD committees. The multigenerational and interdisciplinary aspects of the society are what I find the most appealing. I also consider the society’s emphasis on ethics extremely important. As a chapter, we have consistently participated in the Mid-Columbia Regional Science and Engineering Fair sponsoring a Special Award for Best Use of the Scientific Method. We recently, have sponsored an award at the Washington State Science Fair. I believe the Area Groups, Industries, State and Federal Laboratories Constituency plays a key role in sustaining membership in the society and I would like to foster a stronger transition of new members from the academic chapters to their Post Doctorial Positions and early career institutions. I am very aware of the diversity issues in science and see the Society as a means to offer advice and support to minority researchers.
