Background Information

Statement

I recently joined Sigma Xi after noticing their booth and work at a series of AAAS Pacific Division meetings. It is an organization at which my experience as a professor and within AAAS will serve me well.

I am standing for election to serve as the at-large representative for the Committee on Nominations for the Membership At Large. Selecting new candidates for President-elect and Treasurer is vitally important to the organization, and the choices made on this committee will directly influence the future direction of Sigma Xi.

I don’t come into this position with an agenda or specific ideas. First, I must learn more about the organization, and this service will provide a portal into the inner workings of Sigma Xi, allowing me the opportunity to observe the successes, failures, and processes employed. Beyond this position, I have always been interested in the management of, particularly, scientific societies.

I think I bring a valuable perspective: that of a professor whose focus is primarily on undergraduate students (and some MS work; my university doesn’t offer PhDs). Sometimes the harder, base-level work is forgotten as organizations focus on more recognized PhD, postdoc, and faculty research. But without undergraduate research and the faculty who mentor these students, there would be far fewer PhD students, and they would be far less prepared. I should note that this includes K-12 work as well, though that’s not my bailiwick.
