Vision and philosophy for the Society:
As a multi-disciplinary society Sigma Xi has a unique part to play in promoting science and engineering to a wide audience, addressing complex multi-faceted problems. Unlike most professional societies that are narrowly focused, Sigma Xi is in a position to bring together scientists and engineers from all disciplines to educate a new generation, provide a platform for discussion and to help solve the many challenges facing the country and the globe. The American Scientist is a treasure, providing informative and educational columns and papers that speak to a highly educated audience while still being very relevant and understandable to non-experts. And not only science and engineering, but art as well. It is a unique publication that needs a diverse audience. But, Sigma Xi must figure out a way to re-establish its position as a leading organization to be heard through the noise of all of the groups vying for the attention of young emerging scientists and engineers. We need to do a better job of explaining the tangible benefits and value to the membership. We need to clearly articulate how we differ from other societies and organizations why membership and participation should be valued. Focusing on providing tools and resources for young scientists and prestigious recognition for senior scientists as well as advocacy for scientific literacy throughout society is one area that Sigma Xi can have its greatest impact. The efforts of the Society should focus on the strength of its diversity and multi-disciplinarity and create communications and programs and hold meeting that address problems from all angles (different disciplines in science and engineering, public policy, education, art and aesthetics).
Description of relevant experience with budgeting and financial statements:
I do not have formal training in accounting practices. My practical experience with formal budgeting and accounting is relatively modest. However, I served as chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University where I was responsible for not only the department operating budget but also the proceeds from a $10M endowment. This required budgeting, forecasting, conducting a trend analysis and tracking expenditures as the fiscal year nears an end, and providing year-end statements and reports. I was treasurer of FIU’s Sigma Xi chapter for one year and now serve as Vice President. I served four years as national President of the Alpha Et Mu Beta Biomedical Engineering Honor Society. I was the treasurer of a Knight of Columbus council Home Company (managing a banquet hall and campground) for 2 years (1988-1999). I served as the Financial Secretary of a Knight of Columbus council from 2014-2019. I now serve as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering and Computing at Florida International University and am responsible for a modest budget for graduate student recruiting and graduate student teaching assistantships. I also serve as the Interim Direct of the School of Biomedical, Materials and Mechanical Engineering in the college.
Previous experience with Sigma Xi programs:
I served as the treasurer of the FIU Sigma Xi Chapter from 2019-2020 and have been the Vice President of the chapter since 2020.
