Statement

Supporting excellence in scientific research and high-quality leadership in the scientific community are essential for a future of discovery, innovation, and advancement. In addition, fostering the constructive interdependence of science research, scientific literacy/communication, and an inclusive society is of critical importance to the prosperity and sustainability of our world. The long-standing mission, strategic plans, and membership of Sigma Xi strongly position this organization to impact these tenants of modern society.

Broadly empowering undergraduate students to value scientific literacy, and more specifically to engage them in scientific research and discovery, is an efficient and effective strategy for the long-term advancement of Sigma Xi’s priorities. Baccalaureate colleges offer an opportunity with targeted focus on undergraduates, but also a challenge in an (often) more limited capacity to engage students in cutting-edge research compared to major research institutions. Creating a more explicit network of communication and shared ideas/resources within the Baccalaureate Division and between Baccalaureate College Sigma Xi chapters could increase potential to recruit, engage, and empower the diverse pool of current and potential members. Specifically, building and maintaining a more active and targeted presence on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), linked to the Sigma Xi community platform, could raise visibility and foster community among the Baccalaureate College constituencies. This would specifically include aspects of fostering undergraduate research, community outreach, scientific literacy, and career exploration at the undergraduate level. This would also offer targeted space to build connections between synergistic organizations such as The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).
