Statement
Sigma Xi, whose motto Spoudon xynones, or “companions in zealous research”, is an interdisciplinary scientific honor society that promotes passion for truth, integrity, and brotherhood of professionals that bridges the divides created by nationalism, sexism, or racism. As we approach the end of a pandemic and begin to embrace the new world we find ourselves in, it is clear that expertise from diverse scientific disciplines will be needed to navigate the unprecedented challenges ahead. Despite the desperate need for science to guide our lives as COVID-19 threatens to become endemic and the US experiences the hottest summer on record, misinformation campaigns are successfully convincing large segments of our population that vaccines are dangerous and global warming is a hoax.
Thus, the scientific problems we face are compounded with social problems. The need for an organization such as Sigma Xi is greater than ever as we look for leaders committed to community outreach and mentoring the next generation of science professionals. The members of Sigma Xi have a responsibility that goes above and beyond merely showing up for a day’s work, just to return home and do it again another day. As Director of the Southwest Region, I hope to help scientists recognize the power of their influence and invigorate their activity in Sigma Xi by empowering existing committees and establishing new ones focused on promoting disadvantaged minorities to leadership positions and engaging local communities in science activities to promote public scientific literacy.
