Statement
Based in one of the most diverse states and graduate research universities in the country (where 1/3 of students come from under-represented groups, and more than ½ are women), I have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity in STEM fields. I serve on the Diversity Committee for the PhD program in Bioinformatics, and have a particular interest in developing post-baccalaureate research opportunities for students contemplating scientific research careers. These programs, and similar programs that provide exposure to scientific research at the earliest time-points in undergraduate education (and even earlier), are among the most effective at increasing the diversity of the STEM workforce.
Having extensive working and research experience overseas, including 8 years working full-time in Asia, and most recently as a Fulbright Senior Fellow in Taiwan, I would be eager to increase SigmaXi’s international profile and partnerships with foreign universities and other scientific societies having greater international reach and membership. Exploring partnerships with such societies, and possibly holding joint meetings and conferences could greatly increase SigmaXi’s visibility and membership.
I would like to support the continued excellence of publications such as the American Scientist and perhaps to increase SigmaXi’s involvement in and commitment to science journalism and the popularization of science to the broadest public audience possible.
Finally, as an at-large from a research intensive, graduate only health sciences university, I would hope and plan to increase SigmaXi’s presence in and relevance to graduate-level research and education, and to increase its membership and activities in the Life and Medical Sciences.
