Statement
I am a full member of Sigma Xi, and I am proud to list my membership at the top of the professional organizations section of my curriculum vitae. Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, is one of the oldest, largest and most respected scientific organizations in the world. The Membership at Large Constituency Director plays a crucial role in representing the broader membership and helping guide the society's direction in promoting scientific research excellence and integrity.
As a physician scientist with over two decades of research experience spanning tropical medicine, drug and vaccine development, and global health initiatives, I am honored to present my candidacy for Membership at Large Constituency Director at Sigma Xi.
My journey in science began at the Medical Research Council Unit in The Gambia, where I was inspired by luminaries like Sir Professor Brian Greenwood and Professor Toumani Corrah to pursue a career in clinical trials of antimalarial drugs and malaria epidemiology (specifically transmission metrics). This early exposure to tropical medicine research ignited a passion that has driven my career ever since. From managing viral hemorrhagic fevers like Lassa fever from the frontlines in Sierra Leone to leading transformative vaccine development programs at Sanofi, I have consistently worked at the intersection of scientific innovation and public health impact.
As a member of Sigma Xi, I deeply value the society's mission to enhance the health of the research enterprise and foster integrity in science and engineering. If elected, I will leverage my diverse background to:
1. Bridge disciplines and sectors: My experience across academic research, pharmaceutical industry, and international health organizations positions me to facilitate meaningful collaborations across diverse scientific communities
2. Champion global scientific engagement: Having worked across multiple continents, I understand the importance of inclusive scientific networks that transcend geographical boundaries. I will advocate for increased collaboration between researchers in developed and developing countries, promoting a truly global scientific community.
3. Advocate for early-career researchers: Drawing from my experience as an educator and mentor at multiple institutions, including my role as an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Malawi, I will support initiatives that nurture the next generation of scientific leaders. I believe in the power of mentorship and will work to create more opportunities for young scientists to engage with experienced researchers.
4. Promote scientific integrity and ethics: My background in clinical trials and research ethics, honed through years of work in challenging environments, will inform efforts to uphold the highest standards of scientific conduct. I will strive to ensure that ethical considerations are at the forefront of all scientific endeavors.
5. Drive innovation and efficiency: In my current role as a Transformation Leader at Sanofi Vaccines R&D, I focus on driving efficiency and innovation in vaccine project execution. I will bring this strategic approach to Sigma Xi, working to streamline processes and foster an environment that encourages groundbreaking research.
My leadership approach emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and impact. As demonstrated through my work transforming clinical trial processes at Sanofi and leading multi-stakeholder initiatives in vaccine development, I bring proven skills in strategic planning and change management.
I am committed to advancing Sigma Xi's vision of a future where science is fully appreciated in all aspects of life. My journey underscores the transformative potential of scientific research and collaboration. With your support, I look forward to contributing to the society's continued growth and impact, fostering a global community of scientists dedicated to excellence and integrity in research.
