Statement

Hayriye Merve Yurdacan It has been a great pleasure and honor for me to be an active member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. I have been a member for past years and I am fascinated by the multi-functional structure of the organization. 

Earlier, I have been in various communities and societies which I was able to lead successfully. I am a Former Senator and a former member of External Relations Committee of University of Southern California GPSS where I served for 3 years. I was particularly committed to increasing involvement of Women in Science, resolution of Student Debts and promotion of NSF funds and actively worked with Senators and Congressmen in Washington D.C. regarding these issues. I was also the president of a student club for 3 years. I served as the membership Chair in an organization for 2 years where I also took part in the revision of Bylaws and policies. 

I believe my extensive experience and involvement in different organizations makes me a perfect candidate for this position. In addition to working in Industry, I have been working with USC in few multi-disciplinary research projects where I collaborate with Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Environmental Engineering. 

Being passionate about Science and Technology, I believe we, Scientists, need to get connected more and therefore we need to communicate more since a great importance of Science and Technology is the ability to teach and educate society. I am looking forward to meeting and working with talented Sigma Xi members for this mission. If elected, I will work hard to recommend the best candidates who have the potential to make valuable contributions to Sigma Xi. I strongly believe I will also benefit from serving as a Representative of Nominations by communicating proactively with possible candidates and understand how we can further improve scientific community together. I nominated few candidates while I was serving as a Grand Judge at International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) for Grand Prize awards and many of them won the prizes.
