In what ways has being a member of the Sigma Xi community supported you as a researcher?
Being a member of Sigma Xi has given me access to researchers at multiple levels. I have been able to meet like-minded graduate students who are performing research at the same level that I am as well as senior researchers who I can reach out to for their expertise. The subscriptions to American Scientist and Smart Brief regularly keep me updated with emerging breakthroughs and news in science. In addition, it’s helpful every year to be able to register for the Student Research Conference at the discounted member fee.
Which experience with Sigma Xi has been most meaningful for you so far?
The Sigma Xi Student Research Conference and Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program have been the most meaningful to me. Attending the conference has boosted my confidence, strengthened my public speaking skills, and allowed me to network with other scientists. Without the GIAR award I would not have been able to complete my research. The success of my project proposal relied on the results I got from the experiments funded by the GIAR award. With that preliminary data I had a basis for my project to write larger grants to complete all analyses for my dissertation.
Would you encourage other student researchers to get involved with Sigma Xi? What makes the Society different from other organizations?
I would encourage other student researchers to get involved with Sigma Xi because the organization spans multiple disciplines of science. It’s refreshing to speak with another researcher who has a different scope of research and can give you a different perspective on your own project. In my experience I’ve found Sigma Xi events and communities to be an encouraging atmosphere with researchers always willing to help each other.
What would you tell donors who are considering supporting Sigma Xi programs like Grants in Aid of Research?
I’d like donors to know that their contributions genuinely make a difference to researchers and ultimately to the wider scientific community. Small grants like the GIAR award provide funding for necessary supplies to start projects that otherwise may not have been funded by other sources.
