There is no longer any question about the warming of Earth's climate, nor is there any question about its primary origins: human production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The Internet and computational modeling are two tools in our laboratory for understanding the effects of climate change. Sea rise, flooding, higher energy and longer lasting storms are all manifestations of this phenomenon. High resolution, large scale data can be used to validate or improve models. The Internet can also provide a communication scaffolding to capture raw data from widely-scattered sensors. NSF's National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is one example. Global academic networks link researchers to major computational resources for purposes of modeling and analysis of sensor data. If we are to discover ways to respond to this imminent threat, collaboration will be a key component and networks will facilitate that. Sharing of data and standardization of metadata are essential ingredients for effective response. Sequencing of the human genome benefited from a similar posture through common and shared databases such as Genbank at the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Institutes of Health.

Biography
Vint Cerf co-designed the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet and is chief Internet evangelist for Google. He is a former member of the National Science Board and current member of Sigma Xi and the National Academy of Engineering; a foreign member of the British Royal Society and Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering; and a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), IEEE, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and BCS—The Chartered Institute of IT. Cerf received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, U.S. National Medal of Technology, Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, Prince of Asturias Award, Japan Prize, ACM Turing Award, Legion d’Honneur, the Franklin Medal, the Catalunya International Prize, and 29 honorary degrees.
