Notice of Run-Off Election

January 21, 2020

Sigma Xi’s 2019 election resulted in receipt of multiple voter write-in candidates for the following positions:

  • Associate Director for the Area Groups, Industries, State and Federal Labs Constituency

    • Term beginning July 1, 2020 and ending June 30, 2023

  • Representative of the Baccalaureate Colleges Constituency for the Committee on Nominations

    • Term beginning immediately, and ending following the fall Annual Meeting, 2022

In accordance with Sigma Xi Society Bylaws III, Section 4: The nominee receiving the largest number of votes shall be declared elected, except that if two, or more, nominees are tied for the largest number of votes, they shall enter a run-off election.

None of the write-in candidates received a majority vote. Each eligible write-in candidate was notified and asked if he or she would accept the nomination for the position. The Sigma Xi Executive Office received three affirmative answers for the associate director position and one* affirmative answer for the representative of the Baccalaureate Colleges to serve on the Committee on Nominations.

Each candidate’s CV, biography, statement and photo will be available for review beginning January 22, 2020.

Duties and responsibilities for each position may be viewed on the Run-Off Elections web page.

The run-off election will be held electronically for active members of each constituency to cast their vote for the candidates within their constituency beginning Monday, January 27, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. and ending Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. If you are in the Area Groups, Industries, State or Federal Laboratories Constituency or Baccalaureate Colleges Constituency, you will receive an email with instructions on how to vote from Vote-Now.com. The candidates receiving the majority of votes will be considered the winners of their corresponding constituency. An inactive member may become active at any time through payment of current dues.

Persons wishing to vote via paper ballot should contact elections@sigmaxi.org prior to Monday, January 27, 2020, to request a ballot. Paper ballots must be submitted to Sigma Xi on or before February 25, 2020.

* Roberts Rules of Order states, “If the bylaws require the election of officers to be by ballot and there is only one nominee for an office, the ballot must nevertheless be taken for that office unless the bylaws provide for an exception in such a case. In the absence of the latter provision, members still have the right, on the ballot, to cast “write-in votes” for other eligible persons.”
