RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society announces a partnership with One Tree Planted that has planted over 92 million trees in more than 80 countries across the globe. For every $25 donated for its Earth Day project, Sigma Xi will plant one tree and support scientific research.w

“Sigma Xi is pleased to partner with One Tree Planted to raise funds for scientific research and the environment,” said Sigma Xi Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jamie Vernon. “Each tree planted represents an investment in the future of our planet and the next generation of scientists and engineers.”

The importance of our partnership and why trees matter:

  • Trees help to clean the air we breathe. Through their leaves and bark, they absorb harmful pollutants and release clean oxygen for us to breathe.
  • Trees play a key role in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters like floods and landslides. Their intricate root systems act like filters, removing pollutants and slowing down the water’s absorption into the soil.
  • A single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insect, fungi, moss, mammals, and plants. Depending on the kind of food and shelter they need, different forest animals require different types of habitats.

Trees also provide tremendous social impacts by providing jobs to over 1.6 billion people, empowering women in underdeveloped nations, and supporting communities devastated by environmental damage.

"We appreciate the support of Sigma Xi and our inclusion in their Earth Day fundraiser," said Ashley Lamontagne, Forest Campaign Manager for One Tree Planted. "The trees planted as a result of the donations of their network will help to plant trees where they are needed most and further our goal of global reforestation"

The partnership is designed to be simple for our supporters to support Earth Day and get involved in global reforestation. For every $25 donated in support of the project, Sigma Xi will give $1 to One Tree Planted to plant one tree. The trees are planted by local partner organizations and community volunteers in areas where there has been deforestation.
