For Jared Boyce and Tengteng Tang, the 2026 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting offered the kind of scientific experience that is difficult to find anywhere else: a week spent alongside Nobel Prize winners and an international community of emerging researchers, sharing ideas, stories, meals, and conversations that extended well beyond their respective fields.
The two early-career scientists were nominated by a Sigma Xi selection committee and chosen to attend the interdisciplinary meeting which took place June 28–July 3 in Lindau, Germany. The Society’s academic partnership offers student and postdoc members an annual opportunity to apply to represent Sigma Xi as “young scientists” at the prestigious meetings.
Boyce, an MD-PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin, was initially nervous about approaching Nobel Laureates, particularly those outside his own area of research. But that anxiety dissolved soon after he arrived.
"I quickly learned that the Nobel Laureates were very down-to-earth and excited to meet the young scientists," Boyce said. He added that conversations covered research and the role of scientists in society but also included plenty of laughter.
Tang had a similar experience. He noted that Nobel Laureates can often seem like distant figures who exist primarily in textbooks and journal articles. However, meeting them in person changed that perception.
"They were friendly, lively, curious, and willing to have genuine conversations with young researchers," Tang said. “Even scientists who have achieved extraordinary things are still people with diverse interests, challenges, doubts, and priorities. That realization made scientific excellence feel more human and, in a way, more attainable.”
Lessons in persistence
Among the many conversations and lectures at the meeting, Nobel Laureate Katalin Karikó made a particularly strong impression on both attendees.
For Boyce, Karikó's opening lecture connected with his own journey through medical and graduate training. Her message was simple but powerful: pursue what you're passionate about and believe in yourself.
Tang was struck by Karikó's candid reflections on the realities of a scientific career. She spoke of how no one can perform perfectly in every area of life and researchers sometimes have to make thoughtful tradeoffs among work, family, and other responsibilities. Her career also offered a reminder that scientific success is rarely a straight line. Setbacks and uncertainty can ultimately become part of a larger trajectory.
"Her story reinforced for me the importance of persistence, perspective, and staying committed to meaningful work even when the path is difficult," Tang said.
Looking beyond the lab
While the Nobel Laureates provided inspiration, some of the most meaningful moments came from conversations with fellow young scientists.
For Tang, those interactions also challenged him to think beyond the boundaries of his own research. He spoke with researchers working in public health policy, robotics, entrepreneurship, biomedical research, renewable energy, and other areas.
"The atmosphere encouraged me to think more broadly about my own research and about the value of learning continuously from people outside my immediate field," he said.
That experience strengthened his interest in interdisciplinary research and in connecting fundamental scientific ideas with practical problems. Going forward, he hopes to engage more with researchers, entrepreneurs, and professionals from other fields to better understand the problems they consider most urgent—and where his own expertise might contribute.
Boyce returned home with a similarly strengthened sense of purpose.
“I particularly enjoyed hearing about triumphs in the face of adversity and large discussions from the current funding crisis to nuclear weapons to issues affecting society,” said Boyce. “I find myself even more committed to ensuring that my research can positively impact the most lives possible and allow me to communicate these findings with the public.”
A week to remember
The international community became an important part of the experience for both attendees. Tang enjoyed learning about the hometowns and communities of other young researchers, conversations that led to travel recommendations and stories about different cultures. Boyce especially remembers the meeting's final day on Mainau Island, where he spent time with Nobel Laureates and the friends he had made during the week. Those connections may prove to be among the meeting's most lasting outcomes.
Advice for future applicants
Both attendees came away from the Lindau meeting eager to encourage other students and early-career scientists to apply. When asked for advice they would pass on to future applicants, Boyce touched on the importance of clearly communicating one’s research to multiple audiences.
“Make sure it can be understood by people within your field, but especially outside of your field,” Boyce noted. “People with different backgrounds will be reading it.”
Tang shared similar advice, as well as tips for making the most of the experience.
"Take advantage of informal conversations as much as formal sessions,” said Tang. “The more willing you are to engage with people and ideas that are unfamiliar to you, the more rewarding the experience will be.”
Their paths may be different, but Lindau reminded both young scientists of something fundamental: progress in science doesn't happen in isolation. It happens when curious people share ideas, learn from one another, and build connections that carry their work in new directions.
