Sigma Xi Hosts Discussion on the Mental Health of Young Reseachers

Hosted by Sigma XiPlease join Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society for a public discussion about the mental health of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society is hosting this Google Hangout in honor of May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

The hangout will be held May 24, 2016, from 3–4 p.m. EDT.

The speakers will be Teresa M. Evans, PhD, of University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Nathan L. Vanderford, PhD, of University of Kentucky. They are two of the co-authors on a study investigating the prevalence of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout in the graduate student and postdoctoral fellow population. Their study asks grad students and postdocs to take the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Health Survey. Previous studies on graduate student mental health will also be discussed.

Dr. Bina Patel, a staff psychiatrist at Stanford University’s Vaden Health Center, will discuss signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout and when to seek help for those symptoms.
