Greg FishelRESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. ― Greg Fishel, chief meteorologist at Capitol Broadcasting Co. on WRAL-TV and Mix 101.5 WRAL-FM, will be a guest of honor in Raleigh at the Symposium on Atmospheric Chemistry, Climate, and Health on November 10 at the Raleigh Convention Center. This public event will feature five nationally renowned speakers who will discuss the latest research advances on climate change and its impact on environmental and human health. A panel will discuss solutions to issues relating to climate change. Fishel will be the guest of honor during lunch from 11:45 a.m.–1 p.m.

“Weather and climate are entities that affect every person every day,” said Fishel. “We are currently conducting a chemistry experiment in the only lab we have. We need to understand as best we can the implications of that chemistry experiment on the earth, its atmosphere, and its inhabitants.”

He will return to the Raleigh Convention Center on November 11 as the keynote speaker of the 17th Annual Student Research Conference. The conference includes a research poster presentation competition for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. It will have professional development sessions for those in—or interested in—research careers, a networking session, and an induction ceremony for new members of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. Fishel will deliver his address titled “Climate Change: My Journey from Ideology to Science” during a banquet. The banquet will take place from 7:00–9:00 p.m.

“I'm looking forward to sharing an almost 30-year-long journey that taught, or reminded, me how to think like a scientist,” he said. “For many years, I did not address the issue of climate change as a scientist, but rather as an ideologue. I want to help ensure that others don't make the same mistake I did.”

Both the symposium and Student Research Conference are hosted by Sigma Xi, the international honor society for scientists and engineers. Fishel is a Sigma Xi member.
