On July 15, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society joined the American Society for Microbiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Association of Public Health Laboratories, as well as other organizations that represent researchers, public health professionals, and health care providers, in signing a letter to United States Vice President Mike Pence. The letter voices support for "leading with science and with the best data available" during a national public health emergency such as the coronavirus pandemic. It also expresses support for "scientific and public health guidance from the experts," particularly Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"We object to any attempt to cast doubt on science and sow mistrust for public health expertise, and to spread misinformation during this challenging time for all Americans," the letter states. "...By heeding the recommendations of those who are on the front lines of progress to combat this virus, we have the best chance at a successful outcome."
