RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, has named science educator, engineer, author, and television personality Bill Nye as the 2026 recipient of their Honorary Member Award in recognition of his longstanding contributions to science education, communication, and public engagement with science.
Nye will receive the honor at Sigma Xi’s annual awards ceremony during its International Forum on Research Excellence (IFoRE) on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
For decades, Nye has helped make science accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages. Best known as the host of the Emmy Award-winning television series Bill Nye the Science Guy, he has used his background in mechanical engineering and his distinctive approach to science communication to encourage curiosity and critical thinking among millions of viewers. Through television, books, live appearances, digital media, and educational initiatives, Nye has continued to champion the importance of scientific literacy and evidence-based understanding.
“Bill Nye has spent his career demonstrating that science is not simply a body of knowledge, but a way of exploring the world,” said David Allison, president of Sigma Xi. “His ability to spark curiosity and invite people into the process of discovery has inspired generations. We are delighted to recognize his extraordinary contributions to science communication and public understanding of science.”
Jamie Vernon, executive director and CEO of Sigma Xi, echoed the widespread appreciation for Nye’s decades-long dedication to science and society. “For generations of young people, Bill Nye has helped make science feel accessible and exciting while demonstrating why scientific thinking matters far beyond the laboratory. His career reflects the kind of public engagement with science that Sigma Xi has championed throughout its 140-year history.”
Nye’s career has included work as an engineer at Boeing, where he developed a hydraulic resonance suppressor for aircraft, before he turned his attention more fully to science education and communication. His work has earned numerous honors and brought scientific ideas to audiences far beyond traditional academic and research settings.
“I’m humbled to receive an honorary Sigma Xi membership," said Nye. "To be welcomed into a society with a deep commitment to research, discovery, and integrity, and to be amongst a group of such esteemed members, inspires me in the fight to advance science for the public good. If we work together, we can change the world.”
As an Honorary Member, Nye joins a distinguished group of individuals recognized by Sigma Xi for exceptional contributions to science and society. The Honorary Member distinction recognizes individuals whose accomplishments have advanced scientific understanding, promoted scientific achievement, or contributed significantly to the public appreciation of science.
The November awards ceremony, which takes place virtually during The International Forum on Research Excellence, will bring together members of the Sigma Xi community and invited guests to celebrate Nye and his contributions to making science more understandable, approachable, and inspiring.
