A widely published, award-winning freelance science writer, Ben Patrusky is executive director of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. Since 1975, he has organized the Council’s annual “New Horizons in Science Briefing” for science reporters. He also has served as science communication consultant to a number of non-profit institutions, including Research to Prevent Blindness, the National Kidney Foundation and the American College of Gastroenterology. A native of New York City, Patrusky attended public school in Brooklyn, received a degree in electrical engineering from City College of New York and was a Sloan-Rockefeller Advanced Science Writing Fellow at the Columbia University School of Journalism. Following his fellowship, he joined the staff of the American Heart Association (AHA) as research reporter and science editor. In 1973, he designed and launched AHA’s highly successful and widely copied Science Writer’s Forum. Patrusky’s articles have appeared in many national magazines. He is the author of two books, The Laser: Light That Never Was Before (Dodd, Mead) and Living With Your Heart (Western). His many honors include the Science Journalism Award from the American Institute of Physics and the American Chemical Society’s Grady-Stack Award.
