1995 John P. McGovern Science and Society Award
Stanford University professor Sidney D. Drell is deputy director of Stanford's Linear Accelerator Center. He received his A.B. degree from Princeton University in 1946 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has held faculty positions at the University of Illinois and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in addition to Stanford, and is a former co-director of the Stanford Center for International Security and Arms Control. His many government appointments include service with the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, the National Security Council, the Office of Technology Assessment, Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He is a former member of the Presidential Science Advisory Committee and chairman of the High Energy Physics Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Energy. Drell is on the board of trustees of the Institute of Advanced Study and is a member of the Carnegie Commission on Science, Technology and Government. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he has twice been a Guggenheim Fellow and is a former president of the American Physical Society.
