1993 Monie A. Ferst Award
A professor of engineering at the University of Minnesota, Sparrow received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. Following his graduate work, he was employed as a research scientist at the NASA Lewis Research Center before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota in the department of mechanical engineering in 1959. During his tenure there, he served as chairman of the fluid mechanics program from 1968 to 1980. Sparrow has published over 550 research papers, a book, and has made contributions to several other books. He has worked broadly in all aspects of heat transfer, fluid mechanics and related fields, making important contributions in a number of areas. As senior editor of the Journal of Heat Transfer, he has played an important role in the dissemination of research results. In addition, he has advised 67 completed doctoral theses and 95 completed masters theses that reveal his enduring international legacy in his chosen field of study. Sparrow is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was elected to membership in Sigma Xi by the M.I.T. Chapter. His many awards include the Heat Transfer Memorial Award of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers and the Ralph Coats Roe Award for Eminence in Engineering Education by the American Society of Engineering Education.
