America’s foremost science cartoonist, Sidney Harris was born in Brooklyn, New York, graduated from Brooklyn College, and attended the Art Students League in New York. In 1955 he began his career as a science cartoonist and since then has drawn literally thousands of cartoons. Since 1970, American Scientisthas published more than 600 of his cartoons. In addition to the Society’s magazine, Sidney’s cartoons have appeared in numerous other publications including Science, Discover, Physics Today, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Chicago Magazine, and National Lampoon. In addition, twelve collections of his cartoons have been published includingFrom Ads to Cloning Labs, You Want Proof – I’ll Give You Proof, Stress Test,All Ends Up, and What’s So Funny About Science. A traveling exhibit of his cartoons and paintings has been appearing in numerous museums around the country since 1985. In the 1980s, Sigma Xi and The New York Hall of Science collaborated in making a traveling exhibit of Sidney’s cartoons available to local museums, and other institutions, through the Society’s chapters. Over the years, Sidney Harris has been praised by such luminaries as Linus Pauling and Isaac Asimov, as well as countless scientists throughout the world, for his ability to find humor in science and technology. For his services to science, Mr. Harris was elected by the Board of Directors as the nineteenth Honorary Member of Sigma Xi.
