Biography

Amir H. Gandomi is a Professor of Data Science at the Data Science Institute, University of Technology Sydney. He is also affiliated with Obuda University, Budapest, as a Distinguished Professor. Prior to joining UTS, he served as an Assistant Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology and as a Distinguished Research Fellow at the BEACON NSF Center, Michigan State University.

Prof. Gandomi has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed journal articles and 15 books, accumulating over 68,000 citations (h-index > 110). His publications have also garnered several best paper distinctions, such as the Elsevier-IFAC Best Theory Paper Award in Engineering Applications of AI, from 2020-2022. Web of Science has listed him as a Highly Cited Researcher six times, and Elsevier-Stanford metrics rank him 24th worldwide in the 2023 “AI & Image Processing” subfield. He is currently the 4th top Computer Science scientist in Australia based on Discipline/D-Index.

His work has received numerous honors, including the 2025 Frederick Palmer Prize (ICE, UK), the 2024 IEEE TCSC Award for Excellence in Scalable Computing (MC), the 2023 Achenbach Medal (Stanford University), the 2022 Walter L. Huber Prize, the highest mid-career research award in civil engineering, and the 2021 Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) from Australian Research Council.

Prof. Gandomi has pioneered “AI for good” applications in healthcare, water and environmental management, and agriculture. Notably, he led UTS team “Kangaroos” to become the sole Australian finalist and Honorable Mention Winner in the Pandemic Response Challenge (XPRIZE & Cognizant, 2021). He serves as Associate Editor for leading IEEE journals and regularly reviews for major science foundations. Prof. Gandomi is a frequent keynote and invited speaker worldwide, championing responsible and impactful AI research.
