RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. ― American Scientist, a publication of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, has been recognized for its journalistic excellence. On May 16, 2025, the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) presented its 71st Jesse H. Neal Awards, the most prestigious awards for business journalism and content creation. American Scientist was awarded the top prize in the "Best Technical/Scientific Content" category. The winning article, Gliflozins for Diabetes: From Bark to Bench to Bedside, was written by Philip A. Rea and published in the November–December 2024 issue of the magazine. American Scientist consulting editor Corey Powell accepted the award at an in-person ceremony at The Yale Club in New York City.

Now in its 70th year, the Neal Awards honor the brightest, most tenacious, and innovative journalists, content creators, and designers for their passion and exceptional work. Entries are scored on three criteria: execution and craft, journalistic enterprise and significance to the field served. The winning article outlines the history of the development of an innovative diabetes drug, fortuitously discovered by a researcher digging up and relocating an apple orchard. The class of medication, called gliflozins, are the first to target the kidneys, despite the disease long being linked to kidney function.
