Addressing Research on Gender Bias

graduation capsSigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society hosted a Google Hangout on March 29, 2016, to discuss two recently published scientific papers about studies that found gender bias against women in educational settings. The scientists who ran the studies discussed their research. The discussion included points about what can be done to address gender bias in science. A recording is available.

The two studies that were discussed in the hangout are:

  1. "Males Under-Estimate Academic Performance of Their Female Peers in Undergraduate Biology Classrooms," published February 10, 2016, in PLOS ONE.

    The authors on the hangout were Sarah L. Eddy, of the Texas Institute for Discovery Education in Science at The University of Texas at Austin, and Daniel Z. Grunspan, a graduate student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Washington.

  2. "Student Evaluations of Teaching (Mostly) Do Not Measure Teaching Effectiveness," published January 7, 2016, in ScienceOpen.

    The authors on the hangout were Kellie Ottoboni, a PhD student in the Statistics Department of University of California, Berkeley, and Anne Boring, a researcher at Sciences Po-Paris.
