Next Google Hangout: The Mathematics of Crime

June 13, 2016

Andrea BertozziDr. Andrea Bertozzi of UCLA, a Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer, will be the guest for American Scientist's next Google Hangout, "The Mathematics of Crime."

The Google Hangout will be broadcast on June 14 from 3:30–4:30 p.m. EDT on American Scientist's Google+ page

Dr. Bertozzi is part of a team of mathematicians and social scientists from UCLA helping law enforcement agencies across the country to determine where crime is likely to occur in the near future. The team developed a “predictive policing” computer program that zeros-in on areas that have the highest probability of crime. Commercial use of the "predictive-policing" program allows law enforcement departments to tailor the placement of police officers, potentially stopping crime before it happens.

Watch a short NSF video about the research is here.

After the hangout, Sigma Xi members can post followup questions or comments in the Sigma Xi online community, The Lab: Members to Members, under the thread, "Let's Talk About Predicting Crime."
