Barbara Culliton is editor-in-chief of Nature Medicineand Washington Bureau Chief for Nature Publishing Inc. She has spent more than 25 years as a correspondent engaged in medicine, biomedical research and policy. Ms. Culliton joined the staff ofNature as deputy editor in 1991, with responsibility for the publication's editorial activities in North America. In 1992, Nature Genetics became Nature'sfirst daughter publication, followed in 1994 by the launch of Nature Structural Biology; Nature Medicinewas launched in January 1995. Before joining Nature, Culliton had a long and distinguished career at Science. She was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences in 1988 and in 1993 won election to the IOM's Governing Council. She is a visiting professor in the writing seminars at Johns Hopkins University and has been an advisor to a number of medical organizations, including the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Psychiatric Association. She was the first chancellor's lecturer in the public understanding of science at the University of California at San Francisco. Culliton has given numerous other lectures, including a plenary address to the Association of American Medical Colleges. In 1991, she received an honorary doctor of science degree from the Hahnemann University Medical School in Philadelphia. A graduate of Vassar College, Culliton is a past president of both the National Association of Science Writers and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing.
